On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol.
Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval.
Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

Wonderful in every way.
Really enjoyed the story and narration, probably the best audiobook I have had the pleasure of listening to.
I’m actually quite sad it’s finished, I will miss the Count and his friends.
Highly recommended!!!

A slow delight
This is not a fast paced romp but more of a lazy afternoon ramble. A nicely written pleasure.

Wonderful
I absolutely love this tale, it’s long and beautifully phrased with a combination of humour, philosophy and brilliant twists & turns. One of those books you don’t want to end.

A great tale
A fairy tale of a kind where good triumphs over evil. I read the book and then enjoyed the audiobook, an other experience. No spoilers , highly recommended.

Oh no, it's over!!!
I absolutely loved this book. Story and narration were both faultless - no! impeccable - aaaargh those terms sound sterile and don't do them justice. Try rich and nuanced. Could just be my all time favourite. If you love literary prose, wit, well drawn characters, intimate relationships, great settings and a little peril ... this book is for you.
