... that I’ve finished listening to this wonderful book. My life will be empty without the courteous, witty and charming Count Rostov. What a fabulous way to stride twentieth-century Russian history as it flows in, out and around the Hotel Metropol. The genius of the story is the weaving in of tiny details that eventually coalesce to form a perfect and satisfactory conclusion to a brilliant plot. It’s superbly narrated, each character springing to life with pitch-perfect accents and nuances. A delight of a book.

I absolutely loved this book. Based around one man, in virtually only one location but full of humour, historical information, characterisations. It's a wonderful book. Interesting and well written (apart from missing 'of's' eg to throw something out OF the window). I will remember it forever. Thank you.

Took me a few replays of the first few chapters to get into this book: but that’s not unusual. Once I did, I loved all aspects. The characters were engaging and the prose witty. In fact the only glitches were the narrators pronunciation of a few words: Dvorak being an example. But my pernikettyness was really just an extension of the Counts fastidious attention to detail.

A beautiful, heartwarming story full of wit and pathos. More a study of human nature rather than a critique of the implementation of communism in USSR.
One of the most perfectly performed audio books I’ve ever listened to.

I don't usually review, but I was nearly put off this by some of the other reviews about the narration. I would just like to say that in my opinion they are completely wrong . This was nothing short of wonderful, the pacing was excellent and the phrasing superb. There are some words that are said in specific ways, but to my mind this was deliberate and cleverly done. I loved every minute and was sad to reach the end.
