I started listening to these before I knew that EE had died. I loved the first book, so bought the next two, and was so sorry to learn there would be no more. I am very grateful for her son completing this one, it must have been tough to do. Selfishly I am really sad that we won’t get to follow more of the stories from Selchester, there were a million more in that town, I feel! I think the books captured the style and attitudes of that period really well, and felt like they could have been written in The 50s. There is a good rounding off of the stories so far, without trying to assume how things may have unfolded. The afterword is most interesting as the author’s son did not have a great deal to work on, as his mum died very quickly, but he captures her style and respects it very well. Thank you for finishing this off.

I so enjoyed the three books as I have all her books and am so sorry there are not more of them. The Selchester trilogy has left one wanting more and it was only the fact her son finished it that it was completed. Would have loved more but sadly it was not to be.

Intelligence officer Hugo Hawksworth is still residing at the Selchester Castle with his much younger Sister Georgia. Along with the New Earl and his two daughters

Someone is leaking secrets to the Russians and yet again there is a familiar theme where The ones at the top (in the facility they call ‘The Atomic’ where Hugo is based) think it’s a open and shut case and think they have the suspect locked up. Hugo’s senses tell him otherwise. Now he needs proof.

A body turns up and as Hugo starts to dig deep he is being blocked left right and centre. I am glad to see the old characters from the first two books including Freya and Georgia Hugo’s 13 year old sister who is wise beyond her years may be in danger as obstacles are getting in the way the closer he gets to the truth.

I found this series of book’s quite endearing. Very different to todays crime stories because these are written at a much slower pace and the main drama for me is near the end when it jumps into action action

This is, just like its 2 companion books, well read and well written. The plots are extensively researched, cleverly constructed and fiendishly engaging - saving the best for the inevitable "twist" towards the end. The English is beautifully expressed British Standard English, avoiding the trend towards mid-Atlantic or even, American English. Michael Page's characterisations are superb, his voice is exceptionally well suited for the period and his diction is excellent. This is another light-hearted, entertaining, jolly tale that's strength lies in its discriptive narrative. The action, when it comes, is maintained at a plausibly "normal" level - without the intensity of Bourne or Bond. Hugo, is no less a hero, despite his current physical, social, domestic and professional situation.
This is a fine conclusion to a tremendous little canon and I am happy to recommend all 3 as the best way to enjoy each individually.

Long on Narrative,Short on Action

I've enjoyed all three books in the series and certainly appreciate that the final book was completed by the author's son (thank you!). However, I've only just endured the narration, finding the narrator's voice grating on my ears. The accents are not always convincing and the production quality is poor.

I'm so sorry to have come to the end of this series. There's a very touching epilogue to explain this. The characters are very well drawn and brought to life by excellent narration. Such a shame there will be no more.

I really enjoyed the three Selchester novels, this being the final one. Great characters that hark back to a cold war 1950s. Very enjoyable and well performed.
