About this listen
Two new apprentices. One charming engineer. A potential battle with both sea serpents and evil sorcerers.
When Sorcerer Adrien Danvers takes on a job that leads him into the slums of England, he never imagined he'd end up with not one but two apprentices. Despite his doubts about himself, he's the only chance the two pre-teens have to escape their hellish life.
When Sir Hugh Quartermain contracts him to deal with the mysterious circumstances surrounding his home on the Isle of Man, Adrien finds the more time they spend together, the more his walls come down around the beguiling engineer—an unusual occurrence and a terrifying prospect.
As it turns out, this case is about to take a turn—a battle with both beast and man, the ultimate test of Adrien's willingness to accept help. When he does, Hugh proves to be a fierce protector and friend, more so than Adrien could've ever bargained for, and he finds himself longing for something he shouldn't.
Falling for his new friend is not a complication Adrien needs. (His matchmaking apprentices disagree.)

Great story
Loved the story but, as a previous reviewer has said, the narrator, while having a lovely and clear voice, simply could not manage the accents. Both the inconsistencies of the English accent and the Irish accent used for the Scottish characters .

Just Perfect!
The story was engaging from the start. Plot and character development were perfectly balance. The romance may be slow burn but you don’t feel like you’re sat around waiting for it. Rather you’re swept along by the story and delighting in the slow reveal.
The main characters feel genuine and warm and it has that delightful intimacy between friends AJ Sherwood does so well.

Great book, terrible narrator
I read this book when it came out and loved it. I'm a huge fan of the author, this book is quite different to their other stuff, its set at the beginning of the 1900's and is a very slow burn. But thats fine because its all story. Magic is real and openly used, the apprentices still have stigma because of their poverty and the industrial revolution is still occuring. There is still a lot of back stiry to be explored so I'm looking forward to future books in the series.
Now to the part where I feel mean but its just honesty. The narrator is clearly not British and the whole book is set in the UK so is performed in a British accent. Unfortunately this narrator can't do a British accent. Now I AM British so maybe I'm hypersensitive but he gets so many pronunciations wrong I was just cringing. Also, because I like and trust the author, I hadn't thought to listen to a sample before i purchased so thats on me. The narrator did have slightly different accents for each character, one of which was Irish for reasons that I didn't understand, and the recording was clear so i would listen to them narrating a book where a British accent wasn't required but sadly this one wasn't for me.

Narrator
I loved the story but the narrator was dreadful. His accents were diabolical and didn't differentiate between characters, which really detracted from the overall experience. Also the author should really do more geographical research.

Really enjoyed it!
No spice and the romance is pretty slow (like there wasn't even a kiss) but I really enjoyed the book. The narrator was also new-to-me and he did a great job!
