About this listen

December 1953

Hugo Hawksworth is on the tail of rogue Cold War agents at a top-secret government facility, while back home at Selchester Castle they're awaiting the arrival of the new earl - an American, the long-lost son of the murdered Lord Selchester.

The town of Selchester, rich in scandal and gossip, is unsure what to make of the earl or his teenage daughters, but they know that his sharp-tongued half-sister, Lady Sonia, furious at being deprived of her inheritance, won't be a merry guest over Christmas.

The new Lord Selchester can cope with the strangeness of English country life, but he hadn't expected stolen paintings - or a body in the hothouse.

What's the link between Hugo's investigations and the suspicious goings-on in the town and at the castle? And will he and his allies get to the heart of the mystery before the murderer gets to them?

Quaint and very likeable English murder mystery

With this second book, this series is getting onto its stride. The characters are well drawn and brought to life by the narrator and although the story is fairly thin, it doesn't matter because of the charming backdrop. I'll be sorry when I've finished the third and final book.

Excellent continuation of the series

Any additional comments?

Develops the story on from “A Gentleman of Some Repute”, but with a bit of a jump which is covered by the short story "A Youthful Indiscretion". You don’t need to read that to follow the developing storyline. Some new characters are introduced, which I thought helped the illustrations of life in the early 1950’s, and added some interesting tensions to the story. And things are still left open enough for further books, which I look forward to listening to.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

What did you like most about A Question of Inheritance?

The key characters had already become friends during the first book in this series and I love the 1950s setting...

Who was your favorite character and why?

It has to be the precocious teenage Georgia.

What about Michael Page’s performance did you like?

Apart from one small thing it was faultless - could someone please teach him the correct pronunciation of 'PLAITS' - braids to you Americans :)

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It certainly made me smile...

Any additional comments?

Roll on Book 3 and hopefully more!

I've loved living in this world with these people

I can hardly believe that I've found a jolly good story, set in a time that I love, written with skill. It's not hard to find books online that have a good plot but the self publishing opportunities we have now mean a total lack of filter on actual writing ability.
This and the first book in the series have been very good indeed and read with skill too. Not looked yet but am hoping there's more.
Well done Elizabeth Edmondson.

Wonderful period mystery

The narration was most enjoyable and the story thoroughly engrossing. I would highly recommend this audible book.

Excellent

I thoroughly enjoyed this book the second in a series, after enjoying book one. This is not the type of book I would normally year, but an excellent read none the less.
