About this listen

Created to defeat the invaders. Forgotten in victory. They will rise again …

We were outnumbered, outfought. Mankind was about to fall to the alien Flock. Our only chance was a desperate gamble, transforming Tier One SpecOps agents into deadly super soldiers.

In the end, we won the war, but we lost the peace. The Flock surrendered and spent the next two hundred years making reparations, indentured to humanity, doing everything humans did not want to do. And the evolved super soldiers were consigned to an endless sleep. Ready if ever needed, but in time they became myths. Abandoned and forgotten.

And then, when we were content in our dominance, the Flock revolted against all of humanity across the whole of the galaxy. We fell in a single day.

Which is when the dreams began. People across the settled worlds began dreaming of the Sleepers. The evolved saviors. Acts of rebellion and terrorism swept the galaxy, and in response the Flock ground us under heel.

Lexi Chow, descendant of a hero of the Flock War, believes the Sleepers are real, and are humanity’s only chance against the alien conquerors. With a crew of misfits, criminals, and believers, she sets out to wake the Sleepers. Hoping they will once more save us.

If the betrayed Sleepers are willing. If the Sleepers are even human.

If the Sleepers are on our side at all …

It's not often you stumble upon a masterpiece that details the cultural "defect" of humanity that is, paradoxically the very strength we rely on in times of hardship. The authors have really integrated the self interest of each character and intertwined the knife-edge balance of saving mankind and that of self sacrifice. Such an amazing book, and will be gnawing at my nail (whatever I am left with after listening to this) waiting for the next edition, kudos, what an amazing book.

The first fourteen chapter (part one of five or six, and first 14 chapters of like 190+) is not about Lexi, so it was a bit confusing.

and when Lexi is introduced, she is not the only one - I was kind of expecting Lexi to be the sole protagonist, so I started off a bit wrong.

The premise is cool, and the story is great - it would do wonderful as a movie or show.

Good story, it will have good legs for a long line of them. I found the first half of trying to understand the timeline confusing but got it eventually. There was also some annoying contradictions dotted around in there but overall it was great.

Pretty good start

Title says it all really! Can't wait for book 2! Brilliant story, perfectly narrated by Ray (Many voices) Porter

Wow, if really was epic as F****

Firstly, the good. Ray Porter is, as always, a great narrator. He does his best with what he's been given with this book. But for me, that's where the praise ends.

The writing style really rubbed me the wrong way. A LOT of repetitions. Parts where the narration makes a certain claim or statement and then the exact same thing is said again by the characters. This doesn't happen just once or twice, but constantly. I'm also fairly certain the book was badly edited as well, because there's a female character that referenced as male a couple of times, likely missed leftovers from earlier drafts.

The story isn't much better either. There's a lot of setup. A lot of mythologizing and build-up when it comes to 'The Sleepers', but the payoffs are often disappointing and predictable. There are a few points in the story where it feels like the authors might be introducing some interesting twist to the story, only to end up going for the obvious outcome anyway. To top it off, the book makes a lot of mentions of older, better science fiction writers and stories, as if hoping that dropping these references will improve the quality and depth of the story. It doesn't.

Very disappointing.
