About this listen

France's favourite country policeman investigates a suicide and gets involved in a tricky local issue in the next adventure in this ever popular and bestselling mystery series.

'FRENCH TOURISM SHOULD RAISE A GLASS TO WALKER'S DORDOGNE MYSTERIES' Daily Mail

Bruno Courrѐges is chief of police of the lovely Dordogne town of St Denis with a remit that covers the beautiful valley of the river Vézѐre. One autumn morning he comes across an abandoned car parked near a local beauty spot. Inside is a dead woman, Monique, an apparent suicide resulting from depression. But there are circumstances surrounding the death that raise Bruno's suspicions, particularly when disputes arise surrounding her Will.

At the same time, Bruno makes the mistake of interfering in a local marital dispute. Deputy mayor Xavier has been playing away and finds himself evicted from the family home. Old controversies about deer culls take on new life and then a second campaign begins, stating that Bruno is less of a village copper and more of a secret policeman, whose main job is working for French intelligence. Some of the ammunition for this attack, Bruno learns, comes from Xavier, who sees this as a way to topple Bruno and the mayor and succeed to the mayor's job himself.

Suddenly Bruno's shiny reputation is looking a little tarnished as he battles to save his name and answer the questions surrounding Monique's suicide.

Love the characters, setting and plot, as far as it went. I was a little disappointed in the amount of ‘over-indulgence’ in political background. I love these books but please don’t forfeit plot for proselytism.

Twisty plot in a superb setting with well-loved characters

A return to the cosy village and the well known people that surround Bruno. A new lover, maybe? And a brilliant story interwoven with a second equally interesting plot. Well done.

Tradition and friendship win

The narrator put me off as his performance reminded me immediately of ‘The Eagle has landed “ and the sequel “The Eagle has flown”. Waiting for Kurt Steiner to turn up ! 🙁

Up to standard but …..

Have read/listened to the full series I had been waiting with excitement for this book. it didn't disappoint.
There was enough pace in both the personal and professional life of Bruno and the usual accurate knowledge of the legal, wine and geographical etc to make it enjoyable. The commitment in the personal investment into the characters was very enjoyable.
My long time 'crush' on Bruno was rekindled and I'm glad another woman has come into his life who will stay for another book. I do hope his dream of future kids etc is fulfilled.
Now the long wait for the next installation. Thoroughly recommend the full series.

Brilliant again, of course.

Another enjoyable instalment.A bit slack with some lines repeated and too much detailed food description for me but always good to revisit Perigord.

Glad to have Bruno and Balzac back

I have been looking forward to the latest episode as I do every year, but this was probably the weakest book of the series. I still enjoyed it and the narration as ever was excellent.

Good, but the weakest of the series Will
