About this listen

A real untold story. Dr. Jordan B. Smith, Jr. became the first African-American to become the Color Company Commander at the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis or USNA) in 1976. The Class of 1976 African Americans set the pathway for changes, by demonstrating that Blacks and other minorities had earned the right to be in Annapolis. The incidents and events are authentic. This audiobook is about one of the Black men who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1976 whose accomplishment ignites a communication frenzy among the media - as another Navy tradition goes away. The cover picture shows a Black girl wearing a traditional, southern belle, formal White dress. The pictures of this event make public that Blacks could compete with their White counterparts and live in harmony. These Black midshipmen pioneers of Annapolis brings an end to the discriminatory tolerant institutions of learning at the United States Naval Academy.

At the time, the author thought this accomplishment was insignificant, but it faded away with time and only existed as a memory. The cover picture of this audiobook is on display in the Naval Museum in Annapolis, Maryland. The image is on display in a glass case, close by uniforms of Admiral Nimitz and Farragut, and other historical Naval documents and artifacts. Most African-Americans today are familiar with Black sports professionals like Michael Jordan, and few if any know anything about the accomplishment of African-Americans who broke barriers to scuttle Navy traditions at Annapolis. The achievements of these Black military men are well concealed and camouflaged.

However, no significant progress ever happens without setbacks, diversions, decisions, failures, and modifications of strategies. Perseverance and struggle in making the dream a reality, has never failed throughout the author's lifetime. It is the development of Dr. Smith's growing mindset that allowed him to believe that he could become the 17th Company Commander.

Good book to read

This is a relatable story to me . The author brings to light what happens in the African American community relating and sharing his own trials and tribulations. The author makes sure the reader is not carried away by his stories or experiences bringing out the learnings through the process. This book earns a place in the annals of history

This book is a pride and joy of African Americans whether they appreciate it or not. I am ever so grateful that Dr. Smith has taken the time to document his journey in this regard. The book, being read by the author himself, is passionate but forceful, powerful but inspiring.

As I listened and re-listened to the audiobook I realized, yet again, how grateful I must be to the author and other pioneers who walked their walk despite the challenges they encountered and have now become stalwarts on whose shoulders we rise – people like Dr. Martin Luther King and President Abraham Lincoln.

I thank the author both for his service and for documenting his story. I encourage everyone, irrespective of race, color, or creed to acquire and listen to this book so that we all as a race – a human race can slowly fill the gaps in our knowledge of the past we all share.

Insightful and I learned a lot

This genuine tale is motivational. It draws attention to the highs and lows that this African American experienced while attending Annapolis. His difficulties and hardships while serving in the Marines were also discussed. He explains the life lessons he took away from each chapter of his book. He was blessed in his life, and he has achieved success in his work. I advise getting this audiobook.

Inspirational and educational

I love biographies but it’s so easy to always go for those already with celebrity status. I’m so glad I was introduced this one.

This is not just a take of the author’s history but American history. I love that’s it’s inspiring while learning a bit of American marine history.

The author does not shy away from his hardships, but does not dwell on them either. It’s a good balance of shining a light on an African American marine experience particularly during the JFK era and sharing the valuable lessons learnt, which anyone could use.

Would recommend.

HISTORIC AND INSIGHTFUL!

I was very impressed with Dr. Jordan's recounting of his experiences at Annapolis. It's genuine and balanced, with his various challenges offered from a perspective that indicates his spirit has risen above the negativity and the closed attitudes he encountered along the way. An inspirational read from a man of courage and commitment. Highly recommended!
