About this listen

From bestselling author Martha Beck, a new path to overcoming anxiety by awakening the creativity within.

We live in an epidemic of anxiety. Most of us assume that the key to overcoming it is to think our way out. And for a while it works. But there is always something that sends us back into the anxious spiral we've been trying to climb out of.

In Beyond Anxiety, Dr Martha Beck explains why anxiety is skyrocketing around you, and likely within you. She also tells you how to not only reduce your anxiety but use it to propel you into a life filled with peace, meaning, and joy.

Using a combination of the latest neuroscience as well as her background in sociology and coaching, Beck explains how our brains tend to get stuck in an 'anxiety spiral,' a feedback system that can increase anxiety indefinitely. To climb out, we must engage different parts of our nervous system - the parts involved in creativity. Beck provides instructions for engaging the 'creativity spiral,' in a process that not only shuts down anxiety but leads to innovative problem solving, a sense of meaning and purpose, and joyful, intimate connection with others - and with the world.

The opposite of anxiety, it turns out, is a wonderful new way of life - one that can calm and inspire us as individuals and help us become a source of healing for everything around us.©2025 Martha Beck (P)2025 Hachette Audio UK

A very informative book. The practical exercise are very useful and I will continue to return to them. It would be good if the exercises could be listened to as separate chapters to remove the need to bookmark them. Would highly recommend!

Really useful exercises and an important perspective on anxiety

Thank you Martha Beck for such an interesting, enlightening and fascinating book.

It’s a keeper.

I feel I have so much to learn and you have provided such a lot of inspiring thoughts and processes in your book, beautifully read and lovely touches of humour that made me laugh out loud.

I haven't even finished it (about a third of the way through), but already there have been a lot of, 'oh-ho, so that's why that happens...' moments. Especially useful are the insights into how anxiety coupled with the part of IFS (Integrated Family Systems) explain the seemingly contradictory and irrational stories that people come up with to justify their behavior come about. Martha mixes explanation with exercises so I'm looking forward to learning from, and being gently entertained by the rest of the book. Highly recommended.

Martha's witty, no-nonsense kindness makes so much sense

I really love the book, and arrangement of ideas and anecdotal stories, but missing something crucial, she has some really great real life exercises crucial actionable frameworks to achieve so it’s disappointing that there is no accompanying PDF with these actionable’s because hearing it can be forgotten it would have been easy for the book to have PDF as a reference and it could be screenshot and or printed out! I hope this could be added if her publishers see this comment because it really would be fire! But this isn’t a gripe as the book is fire anyway. Thank you Martha amazing author and thought leader.

Too repetetive . Too many characters to demonstrate her theories. Started off OK but really just very monotonous.

I didn't enjoy this book. I bought it because I listened to the Mel Robbins podcast with this author. I thought it would be interesting but ot just went on and on and my mind kept wandering. Not for me.
