Summary

Josh Malerman’s debut novel Bird Box is a terrifying, Hitchcockesque psychological horror that is sure to stay with you long after reading.

Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors.

The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows.

They are out there. She might let them in.

The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall.

Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them.

Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything.

Critic reviews

"A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one's fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers" (Hugh Howey bestselling author of )

Inconsistencies and a Monotonous Narrator

I fancied listening to this book because I enjoyed the film “A Quiet Place” and the premise of this story looked to be in a similar vein. It turned out that the story didn’t work as well as I’d like and I wasn’t sorry to reach the end. The first problem was the narrator’s rather monotonous tone which didn’t immerse you into the story. There were times when you didn’t know who was supposed to be speaking, no emotion injected into the dialogue, and this helped to make the story drag along. There were also inconsistencies, not limited to finding bodies in an advanced state of decomposition, yet their pet dogs fit and healthy with no food or water.

Based upon this reading, there’s nothing to compel me to listen to the next volume in the story.

Edge of you seat stuff!

I’ve read the book before so I know how it ends but the story still kept me on the edge of my sheet. The story is pretty anxiety inducing but that’s one of the things I like about it. It feels very real as well.
I have to say the performance of this audiobook was brilliant. It really conveyed Mallory’s story.

Intriguing horror with a sub par performance

I’m not saying the narrator is bad. She is not. However she brings nothing to the table, and does nothing to enhance the experience. Often sounding fed up, or bored with the material, she makes no effort to portray the emotions, tone, nuances of the characters dialogue. This story has tremendous potential for a narrator to bring the story to life, yet Catharine Mangold misses the mark so frequently during tense or exciting moments that it often becomes tedious. I was surprised to find out she is an actor. Well Miss Mangold, I beg to differ! Otherwise, a thoroughly enjoyable story with plenty of suspense and subtle horror. For all of you that complain that nothing happens, I recommend a closer examination of the story, or failing that, go back to your jump scare driven, subtle as a brick to the dome - shock horror, and stop review bombing fine literature just because you lack an imagination and thus the capacity to appreciate the understated. I truly pity you.

A gripping tale.

a well told and captivating story which brings vivid images to life. A new take on the blinded people/leathal aggressor scenario as seen in John Wyndham's Day of The Triffids.

Buckle yourself in, you're in for a Bumpy Ride!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ That is some creepy sh*t stars!

This was a reread for me, but it was on our Goodreads group (A Million More Pages, you should totally join, it's awesome!) as a Book of the Month, so ya know...points!

Anyhoo....

This little Dystopian cracker is a creepy little mind fu*k because you don't really know why you are scared, I mean how could you while you are wearing a blindfold?

It all starts when seemingly normal people start to loose their sh*t and go mad, not in the "He's crazy" type thing, i mean totally bat shit crazy, they are normal one second, and the next they are killing their husband/wife/kids, and then turning the weapon on themselves.

When i say weapon i mean anything they have at hand, knives, guns, hammers, even their own teeth!!

This is happening quite far away in a different county, and it is being reported on the TV so it isn't anything to get really worried about.....

Until it starts happening closer to the U.S.A...

Then in your state, then in your home town!

People start to cover their windows/doors and are scared to look outside, as it seems to be that something out there is causing all of this, but the thing is, if you look.....you die!!

So Malorie is there...

In the house......

All alone......

She can't go outside.....

She can't look outside.....

She WON'T look outside............

Oh yes, i forgot to say that she is a few months pregnant!!!!

Because you are with Malorie throughout this creepy little read you start to feel the claustrophobia as you are not really sure what is out there, especially when you have to eventually open that door and go outside............

🎧🎧Audio narration for this book was perfect, Katharine Mangold really managed to make me believe that *I* was Malorie, and i was scared out of my pants!! 😱

Watch the movie

The book was ok, I prefer some of the events that happened in the book to the film but overall the film is able to bring to life what the authors trying to do here. The book is a bit too dragged out and slow paced.

Good, but....

This was a good story, but I didn't enjoy the narration. Make sure you click on the "sample" before purchasing. She's not terrible, but just not good. The story itself is really good.
