About this listen
The seaside can be murder!
Detective Sergeant Flynn Moran is on secondment from the Metropolitan Police in his home town of Muddlebay. Not long after Flynn arrives, the Mayor of Muddlebay is found to have overdosed on atropine. But was it accidental, or deliberate?
Even though nothing ever happens in Muddlebay, Flynn teams up with his old friend Mabel Heggarty, the local librarian, to investigate the death. She knows practically everyone in the town and pretty much everything about them, mostly gleaned from the books they read. Oh, and not forgetting that she listens from behind the stacks to what is the lifeblood of any small town - gossip.
Did someone want the mayor dead? And could that be why a local councilor is overheard plotting to be the next incumbent? Wendy Cartmell is well known for her best-selling Sgt Major Crane Mysteries and more recently her DI Jo Wolfe supernatural crime thrillers. She'd always had an idea for a cozy mystery series bubbling away in the background and the result is this introductory novella to the Muddlebay mysteries. Think Murder, She Wrote, Midsomer Murders, and a dollop of humor, all rolled into one!

brilliant

But...
Tried way too hard to be funny, poor research into details, and really, really needed a strong-willed editor.
How would someone with no people skills get into the police, let alone end up as a detective sergeant? If he has no understanding of idioms, how did he realise someone knew "which side their bread was buttered"?
I can't think of constructive comments about the narrative and dialogue. They'd be fine as a quick outline, but in a finished book?
And not helped by idiosyncratic phrasing and pacing by the narrator.
Okayish story, not helped by the narrator

The story itself could have been good but I gave up due the the truncated chapters that made the whole
experience feel time consuming and disjointed .
Disappointed

Story was fab. Brilliant novella length allows you to be drawn in and doesn’t let you escape until the final words ring out from the book.
Fantastic.
A lovely mystery to get stuck into
