Summary

We were on the front lines in a ruthless world, the mafia world. There was nothing soft or glamorous about it. Who you were before no longer mattered. Names didn’t exist. I joined anyway. I had no other choice because they took my sister. Join. Find her. Try and make it out alive.

Then he won me in a poker game. I hated him instantly, thinking he was like my other bosses before him. He wasn’t. He was worse. He wasn’t just cold. He was dead inside. It didn’t matter that he was gorgeous. He was the most lethal thing I’d ever met. He was also the only person who could keep me alive...if he didn’t kill me himself.

This is a 102,000-word mafia/cartel stand-alone. This is the most violent book Tijan has ever written. Trigger warning: references to sexual violence.

Sheesh

This was an unexpected five star. I seriously couldn’t tell if I even liked a thing about this, but the more I read, the more I wanted to read. And that was how I knew this was a good one.
I’ve read other mafia books, even some from this author, but this one was definitely more gritty than her other works. And not in a bad way. It felt like she dove down deep and really embraced the genre as a whole.
I liked characters I didn’t think I would, even some that I originally disliked, they grew on me.
Wild. This was a wild ride, and I enjoyed it. I can’t wait to see what’s coming after this.

Intriguing, Intense & Addictive! Terrific🎧📚🎧

This book completely blew my mind, it is a dark and twisted story, unlike any I have ever experienced and once I started it I could not stop, it became my addiction, my one and only focus and nothing around me mattered except what was going to happen next. Tijan is a gifted author with a wonderful writing style and a brilliant mind, the story she created has depth and many layers, and she weaves it nicely together and by the end your eyes are wide open. It is a fast-moving story, the complexity of the characters, their growth and the world building is fantastic. I loved the whole concept of the Canary and what she can do, that would be the lead female, aka Ashely, who is on a mission and has gotten herself deep in the mafia world, with purpose. She has also gotten herself into trouble, in with the wrong boss, but her out and saving grace was when said boss that lost her in a card game, except she went from one monster to another. Raize is a man of few words, he has a reputation in both the mafia and cartel world, he is a killing machine, a ghost who sneaks in out and out of places without ever being seen and the reason he is good at what he does. He won the girl in a card game and she her skills can come in handy when needed. He trusts few people, and the girl has a knack for knowing things about people. Ashely thinks Raize is dead inside, you see nothing in his eyes, at least he leaves her be, and she can continue the mission she set out to do, while working with him. They soon learn they have things in common and she gets glimpses that there is a human side to him, a caring side. It was great to watch these two get to know each other and under circumstances different from the norm, there is no normal here, just depravity in a dog eat dog world, a world where survival is based on instinct and trust. Tijan pulls this off seamlessly and masterfully, delivering an original story that may take some out of their comfort zone, it is mention in the blurb that this is her most violent story she had written to date, so keep that in mind when stepping in, this no blossoming romance with flowers and candy. Nope, it is a hardcore, action-packed story that has plenty of drama, angst, thrilling suspense, twists and turns, some heartrending moments, heartfelt and emotions ones too and steamy romance. Tijan, thank you for this crazy wild ride and amazing story.

🎧📚🎧 And for the terrific narration, CJ Bloom and Connor Crais were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life, and they did so with the complete understanding of who these characters were, gave each a voice that fit their character’s persona to a tee. CJ Bloom did an amazing job with Ashley’s role, she grasped all sides of her personality, from her hardness to her caring side, she carried the story on her own close to the midpoint of the book, then Connor Crais jumps in as Raize, taking the role and making it his own. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into their performance and have you feeling every single one. These entertaining storytellers are versatile voice artists and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another fantastic listen.

Such An Intriguing Story!😲

A Wonderfully Violent But Romantic Mafia Read!💥💘🔥🌟
Canary
By: Tijan
Audiobook 🎧
Narrated by: CJ Bloom, Connor Crais
Length: 10 hrs and 53 mins

I really lost myself in this complex & violent mafia tale. The storyline is deep, dark & very dangerous but it holds a certain level of lightness, levity & longing for life within it too. Ash & Jake, initially, bring most of the lighter feelings. The deeper darkness comes from Raize & Ash.💔

Ash is such a strange character. She's not an angel nor others demon. She has a purpose for her choices, which we don't fully understand for a long time. I think she spent much of her time during her mafia years in a state of numb shock!😔 Raize is one thing to most people, a stone cold k!ll€r. He seems cold and d€@d eyed, but he has more going on than we realise. It's shown slowly throughout the book!🙏

The relationships that slowly start to grow throughout this book are stellar. It's all written in such a compelling way that you can't stop reading/listening.😍The world build is very good.💥

I can honestly see the author revisiting this group of characters, even though this has been written as a standalone. Or maybe that's my wishful thinking?🤔 It definitely has the depth to support it, though.😍
Another great read by this author.🌟

Intriguing

Good narration. The tale forces the listener to tune in and to think instead of being purely passive. The MCs are complex, have disturbed histories which weave and entwine through the smart diaglogue and premise, requiring even more input from the listener to put the clues together, to follow the drama to it's conclusion. It is so much more satisfying than having everything spelled out for you. The romance is equally complex and complicated between compelling MCs. No twee statements, no nonsense sentimentality, animal lust slaked as required.

Connor Crais does not enter the narration until hour 5, but he is wonderful and I will be sure to check out other books he has narrated. His style is commanding, masterful, but not domineering. He is perfect for Raize.

This book is head and shoulders over so many in this genre. If you like J R Huss, you will enjoy this book.

Action and romance

Really enjoyed it. Great pace to the story and natural character development. Couldn't stop listening.

Caught me a little by surprise when the narrator changed hours in for different character perspectives but well executed and definitely added to the overall story.

Canary

At the beginning I had my problems to get into the story.
But the story got better and better.

Lot of violence, lot of action and let's not forget the spice.

Fabulous book

Wow what can I say about this book without giving anything away….it was awesome. I was unsure for a while about reading this but once I started I was hooked! It was full of drama, suspense and intrigue. It’s one of those books that will stay with you for a long time. Narration was first class. It enhances the whole experience of the story. I’m hoping maybe one day Roman may get his story told now.
