About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.
The audiobook of Carpe Jugulum is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones; Luther; This Way Up). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Steven Cree (Outlander; A Discovery of Witches) voices the Nac Mac Feegles. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.
"'Carpe Jugulum,' read Agnes aloud. 'That's . . . well, Carpe Diem is Seize the Day, so this means -'
'Go for the throat . . .'"
Vampires have come to Lancre, but they're not what you'd expect. Sure, they drink blood and view humans as dinner, but they're modern and sophisticated. They've got style and fancy waistcoats. And they're not a bit afraid of garlic.
The Magpyr family are out of the casket and want a bite of the future. But they haven't met the neighbours yet.
Between them and Lancre stand a coven of four - Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Magrat and young Agnes - and they don't take kindly to murderous intruders . . .
'An enduring, endearing presence in comic literature' Guardian
'Incredibly funny . . . compulsively readable' The Times
Carpe Jugulum is the sixth book in the Witches series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.
The first book in the Discworld series - The Colour of Magic - was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.
Just perfect

Varma is great, good listen, but not Pratchetts finest

The narration was awesome

Terry Pratchett once again unputdownable

Wherever they crop up (excuse the pun), the narrator makes it sound like Trolls have a brain full of sludge not rock. There's a difference between slow and stupid and unfortunately this falls into the wrong side and can be very jarring to listen to. Igor nearly falls into the same category of being overly exaggerated but just about gets away with it. Fingers crossed that it won't be used in the same style for the Guards series.
That said the rest of the characters are well done, and I've enjoyed rediscovering the audiobooks for my Pratchett fandom (I grew up with the Tony Robinson cassettes). Would recommend listening to one before going out and spending all your credits on the whole series though.
Overall great, shame about the trolls

my favourite audio book performances ever, and ensured I'll be binging all the Witches books as soon as I can!
Indira Varma knocked it out of the park

Indira Varma reads with such perfect timing, such beautiful cadence, I will always think of her as Esme Weatherwax.
Bill Nighy reading the footnotes was like having Terry back. His tone was perfect.
Peter Serafinowicz is so perfect as Death, that is all I can say. perfect!
And in this book, Steven Cree introduces us to the Nac Mac Feegles wonderfully. The first time they spoke I felt such glee! Just amazing.
Listening has taken me back to how I felt on first reading these books. I have laughed out loud, cried. These much, much loved characters walked off the page again.
I can't thank Penguin enough for the love and care that went into these re-recordings.
Onto Small Gods now, so well selected after this introduction to Om, and then I shall await the Rincewind books, already pre-ordered.
The anticipation I have for the Watch and the Death books cannot be expressed, but there is no longer any worry that they won't be done right.
Magnificent!
