Summary
Rule number one: Don’t fall in love with the coach.
Gabriel Theriault’s been skating on thin ice for the past two seasons with Toronto, but his arrest following an off-ice fight is the final straw.
His only shot at redemption is to start over in Evanston and prove that he still has what it takes to be a pro player.
No more fights. No more drinking. No more random hookups.
Rule number two: The team always comes first.
Years ago, Lance Tate’s on-ice injury ended his career and marriage.
His long road to recovery led to a job he loves as assistant coach with the Evanston Otters, and he wouldn’t dream of giving that up.
Until he meets Gabriel.
The French Canadian is 15 years younger, burdened by too much responsibility, and the most intriguing man Lance has ever met.
He’s also the absolute last man Lance should get involved with.
The draw between them is impossible to resist—even if it could cost them the game they love.
Their only chance at winning it all is to change the rules.
Trigger warning: Changing the Rules includes a supporting character with advancing dementia. Frank discussion about an emotionally neglectful parent and verbal abuse. Use of mild homophobic slurs and brief mention of suicidal ideation (non-graphic).

Great story
A fantastic book in the world of hockey. I have read the previous volume, but you can also read or listen to this book well as a standalone.
Gabriel and Lance's story was entertaining, exciting and romantic with a happy ending. I loved Lance simply because he cares so much and he is always there for others. Be it Gabriel or someone in his family. At the same time his past is heartbreaking.
I had a lot of sympathy for Gabriel because he had to deal with so much and it wasn't always easy for him.
And then there's the career of the two of them, which doesn't allow for an outing.
I liked the story and I liked how the relationship between the two of them developed and how Gabriel allowed people to help him.
An entertaining story with great characters.
The narrator did a good job. I could tell the protagonists apart well and the pace of speech was okay too. But it would have been nice if the speaker had emphasized a bit more.

Lovely!
This is a lovely story of a hockey player and one of his coaches who fall in love. Gabriel and Laurence are forced to hide their relationship out of fear of how it would impact their jobs and position on the team.
Their story is sweet and heartwarming - they both brought so much into each others lives. So much love and support.
The audio narration was very good. Portraying the emotions of the characters really well.

Fabulous performance
James Edward Jones did a great performance. His voice is very enjoyable to listen to and it brought the story to life. He kept a good pace and expressed the emotions wonderfully. He gave the characters distinct voices that suited them well and made it easy to follow the story. His Canadian French accent was spot on to me (I'm Canadian). I absolutely would listen to this narrator again. Other than this authors previous books I havent heard his name before but his tone is very pleasant to listen to. i definitely recommend listening to him.

An enjoyable story
4 stars for the story
I enjoyed the story, I'm a bit all over the place reading this series out of order but I don't think that has affected my enjoyment of it. I liked Gabe and Lance and I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow from player and assistant coach to romance and a HEA. Learning about dementia brought on from CTE that Gabe's father is suffering from was sad, especially since Gabe was dealing with it by himself and learning what a selfish ass his father had been when he was growing up and how by making Gabe keep it to himself he continued to be a selfish ass, it made it hard to have much compassion for his father, my compassion was all for Gabe.
There was a fair bit of angst around the relationship that Gabe and Lance fell into, some because of their respective roles and some because 'coming out' in sports is still hard for players. I liked how supportive the majority of the team was.
The narrator was my biggest issue with this book, some parts were done really well, but other parts dragged and the voice became monotonous to listen to, I probably should have tried to up the speed slightly to see if that helped.
I'm looking forward to reading or listening to the rest of this series.

The Cost Could Be High.
MM, Age Gap, Hockey, Romance. Second book in the series and best listened to in series order although it can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Another fantastic couple whose story has been brought to life with great narration. Great to see so many familiar characters pop up, An emotional and at times a tear jerker but a well deserved HEA.

Another amazing listen!
This series has been absolutely amazing and James Edward Jones brought another fantastic performance. His French Canadian accent for Gabriel was beautiful and he brought both main characters to life. Lance and Gabriel’s story is compelling, truly emotional and filled with love and heat. Stellar book and fabulous performance!

Fascinating idea!
Story: Gabriel and Lance’s story was fascinating! The author chose very genuine and important struggles professional sportsmen have to deal with and wove them into an emotional and charming love story.
I loved the deep dive into the MCs’ emotions and their development in the book.
A very engaging and emotional story!
Narration: Great performance and easy to follow! Loved the voice.

Forbidden Romance.
l enjoyed every word of this. I fell in love with both Gabriel and Lance. Things were both raw and emotional between them, but together they're actually quite cute. It is however, a poignant read in places, both guys are not without their problems. I especially felt for Gabriel, his lack of self confidence, and the need to do what he considered the right thing were heartbreaking. When the two were together, I loved how Lance showed how much he cared for Gabriel. It's a great addition to the series, and I certainly hope for more. If you love romance (definitely not always straightforward), this is for you! The narrator did a wonderful job, and totally captured the MCs.

Gabriel and Lance
Forbidden love in the Evanston Otter's locker room between their newest French Canadian defenseman and the team's closeted-bisexual offensive coach. Age gap and the need for secrecy make for a very interesting book. Great story and a wonderful narration (swoony accent for Gabriel!) made this a fantastic book to listen to!
