About this listen

Peter Darwin was hoping for some quiet leave from the Foreign Office. Instead he found himself in the village of his childhood, at the service of a veterinary surgeon whose operating theater was rapidly acquiring an unwanted reputation as an abattoir.

The sudden unexplained death of a string of valuable racehorses from one small area in Gloucestershire was a mystery the police couldn't solve. But Darwin was local. He remembered people and what was at stake. And now he knew enough to get himself killed.

great story

As ever, a cracking story by Dick Francis and excellent narration by Tony Britton.
But, oh dear, the sound quality is very variable. At times, muffled. Different volume levels. Background noise. It was a bit distracting at times.

Good story, good narration, shame about the sound quality

Overall enjoyed the story but I usually do with Dick Francis. The audio for the most part was fine but, between certain parts of the story, it would become quite quiet or with a bit of background hiss. Didn't detract form the overall story though.

Tony Britton good as usual.

Good story, decent audio.

Would you listen to Comeback again? Why?

I would not listen again, the sound is poor with background hiss and noise. I started to listen out for the background noise and not so much on the story which is a shame as I have always enjoyed his audio books in the past.

What three words best describe Tony Britton’s voice?

Rich expressive calming

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Would not listen in one sitting

Any additional comments?

There were also gaps in the recording, quite distracting.

Poor sound quality

Great storyline, fully rounded characters and I really enjoyed it. The narration was great by Tony Britton, although the sound quality suffered due to the age of the recording.

Great.

Shame about the quality of the recording, but ignore it and enjoy a cracking good story.

Another great book

Dick Francis does not disappoint - not as complex as some but still a great story and brilliantly read.

Up to standard

I loved this as I drove to & from the Q.E. Hospital, 3 hours of great story telling. Made the journey flash by & I looked forward to the motorways!
But there is a background noise to this recording which was VERY distracting. It varies though the book & I did wonder if Tony Britton was sat in a mens' public lavatory whilst reading. Both tinkling water & later birdsong, I found my brain straining to identify. This meant I had to re listen to several parts over & over to get the storyline.
Background noise is sometimes incongruous to the setting of a chapter & it certainly affects the concentration & pleasure of listening.
This would certainly bear re-recording!

Classic Francis

The sound quality wasn’t top notch but the narrator was as good as always and the story telling wasn’t spoiled by the sound quality.
A good story and a good ending.

Another great story

Terrible sound in places!
Otherwise great. Classic Dick Francis, only spoilt at times by the suspicion that this recorded in a very amateur way.
