Summary
This is the strange and fascinating life of Erwin Rommel, from his days as a youth in Imperial Germany - when he had a child out of wedlock with an early girlfriend - through his lauded military exploits during World War I to his death by suicide during World War II, after he attempted a failed coup against Hitler.
Rommel was a man of contradictions: a soldier who wrote a best-selling book about World War I, a commander who went from commanding Hitler's bodyguard to trying to kill him, and a serious military mind who was known for participating in practical jokes.
In Desert Fox, author Samuel Mitcham (Bust Hell Wide Open) confronts the truth about Rommel and takes a close look at his military actions and reflections.

Put Aside Prejudice...
I debated for some time before downloading this as my father was involved (as a teenage squaddie) in D-day, and subsequently the defence of Caen. It seemed somehow disloyal, but having taken the plunge I’m glad I did. This is a fascinating story, read really well. Rommel was the ultimate professional soldier and very good at his job, although obviously not without his flaws. Give it a try, to get a different perspective on the Allied victory - and for confirmation that Hitler and his inner circle were every bit as terrible as history portrays them to be.

Fails to mention Bonner Fellers?
I really enjoyed this book, although it sounded more like an essay, perhaps due to the narration.
Rommel was no doubt a very good general. His reputation of being a genius, was no doubt aided, by the American Bonner Feller's broadcasts back to the States, which gave Rommel all the British plans and dispositions.
Bonner Feller was unaware he was using a code, which had been broken by the Germans. A code book had been stolen, photographed and then replaced back into the safe, where it had originally came from... .

Loved it
I was somewhat unsure as to how I would enjoy this given my complete lack of military understanding of tactics etc however you don't need to be a military expert to understand and appreciate the reasons why Rommel was a super soldier. Excellently told and the narrator was again superb. I bought this as it was narrated by Nigel Patterson. He's by far the best narrator I have come across other than Obama reading his own books!

A real gentleman of war
The book shows the human aspect of Rommel,
probably one of the best war Generals ever. The narration is superb as well.

Fascinating story of one of Germanys most renown military strategists.
A well told history of Rommels life which for any war history buff is a must read. The prescience that Rommel possessed could have changed the course of several key battles had anyone at Reich command believed him or supported his strategies. History is often quoted as the story of the victors, this book gives another side to a key person in WW2 both in North Africa and the Western Front. The narrator is good and the many dates and people discussed are well researched and easy to follow.

An amazing account of a military legend
I enjoyed the details of this biography. Although he was a extremely competent military lead he also had a compassionate side.
