Critic reviews

"My favourite historical novelist." (Margaret Drabble)

The narrator's nasal interpretation of Vidal and Avon was almost as bad as his female voices. I prefer Heyer's Regency novels to the Georgian.

Not my favourite

I love Heyer, you always know exactly what the outcome of her stories will be and are spared the worry of the outcome to just delight in the journey itself. This is no exception to her usual formula, and all the more delightful for it.

exactly what you want from Heyer

The speaker made a young man sound like an old Steptoe character, which was really annoying. Vidal had no charm at all, he sounded like a villain. Fanny Marling was a sound alike for an over the top Margaret Rutherford. The narrator had a very nice voice and he should have toned it down for at least those two. I thought he spoke for Leonie well though. The story was great, it moves at a good pace, with a re introduction of favourite characters. Very enjoyable.

Poorly voiced characters.

Ooh, this is delicious. I love a good Regency tale, and this is full of swashbuckling heroes, flighty swooning females, and a plucky heroine who wins her swain in the end. But you know she will, it wouldn't be Georgette Heyer if she didn't.

Even though a French accent is required for one of the characters, the narration is terrific. I loved it!

Great fun

The story is amusing. Michael Drew’s vast array of accents are excellent. His comedy timing is on point. I love the vast quantity of personalities. The era was thoroughly bought to life, with it’s incredulous fashions, and outlook between the classes.

Enchanting funny story

Very Well narrated. The different voices for each character was just what I imagined they would sound like. Really enjoyable listen!

One of my all time greats !

On first reading I loved this book, but to relax and listen to it not only rekindles fond memories but adds a new dimension to the original enjoyment. Michael Drew instinctively brings out not only the nuances of Georgette Heyer's writing, but also the atmosphere and sensations of the period, heightening the emotions and allowing the mind to create images to fit the characters.

As a sequel to These Old Shades, the Cub certainly lives up to the Devil's reputation ... he is a natural offspring for Justin and Léonie, and just as lovable in his own way.

I would recommend Devil's Cub wholeheartedly to devoted fans and those coming new to Heyer alike.

Devil's Cub is alive and kicking

One of Georgette Heyer's best; sparkling with wit. A Moody hero, a spirited heroine and a solid base of historical research from the number 1 writer of regency romance.

No one does it better

The women are poorly portrayed, Lady Fanny in particular and the American pronounciation, "eether" and "neether2 is out of period.
