Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A witty and enthralling Regency romance by one of the best-known and most beloved historical novelists.

The legend of the Headless Horseman and a proposed marriage de convenance both have their impact on the mystery of a golden talisman ring and Lord Lavenham's young heir, Ludovic. Neither Sir Tristram Shield nor Eustacie, his young French cousin, shares the slightest inclination to marry one another, yet it is Lord Lavenham's dying wish. For there is no one else to provide for the old man's granddaughter while Ludovic remains a fugitive from justice....

Yet again, Georgette Heyer shows the qualities that made her one of the most successful and best-loved romantic novelists of her age, and why her popularity endures to this day.

Fabulous reading

I really enjoyed this reading. This is my favourite Heyer book and I absolutely love the reading by Phylidda Nash so I had high expectations! I really enjoyed a different reading and heard different aspects of the book. I enjoyed this narrator’s portrayal of Sir Tristram in particular as well as the Bow Street Runners very much indeed. The other one is probably still my favourite, just because the other narrator reads Eustacie so utterly perfectly but if you prefer male narrators this is the one for you. Both are worth buying. :)

An amusing adventure

I love Georgette Heyer’s historical romances and this one is no exception. A truly amusing adventure story with marvellous characters.
The narration by Joe Jameson was superb and really brought the story to life. His characterisations were spot on especially his portrayal of Eustacie. A joy to listen to.

Joyous!

I have loved Georgette Heyer’s books for over 50 years but often struggle with the performance of them, by readers with no feeling for the flawless sense of period that grace all her Regency romances - thankfully Joe Jamieson is faultless! Please bring me more!

My New Favourite Narrator

Joe Jameson brings the characters to life. A perfect combination of best author and best narrator in one.

A brilliant tale and well narrated

This is one of Georgette Heyer’s best romances and very funny. I already knew the story was great but I am nervous of the audible versions as not all the narrators are good. This one however was excellent with a great range of voices. A couple of questionable pronunciations but better than many and not enough to spoil the story.

Another good version

One of my favourite Heyer romances. My previous recording was by Phylida Nash and is excellent.
I heard the sample of this one and decided I wanted to hear it read by a man. it does not disappoint. He has a nice deep voice that suits Sir Tristan Shield perfectly. The female voices also pass the test. I must admit that I prefer Phylida Nash voices for the various other characters in the book, but these are perfectly acceptable.
Enjoy a good listen.
