Summary
Diamonds are being smuggled on a formidable scale from Africa to America via Britain. 007’s assignment is to break the smuggling ring. It’s a dangerous mission that takes him to the racecourse and mud-baths of Saratoga Springs, the gaming tables of Las Vegas, the ghost town of Spectreville and beyond. The Spangled Mob threatens to be too much even for Bond, but help is at hand in the shape of co-conspirator Tiffany Case.
Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Damian Lewis.
Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.
Damian Lewis has twice been nominated for a Golden Globe, for his role as Sergeant Brody in Homeland and also for his role as WWII hero Richard Winter in Band of Brothers. Other TV credits include The Forsyte Saga, Life, Warriors and Jeffrey Archer: The Truth. His film appearances include The Escapist and Your Highness.
Critic reviews
"The remarkable thing about this book is that it is written by an Englishman. The scene is almost entirely American and it rings true to an American. I am unaware of any other writer who has accomplished this." (Raymond Chandler)
"Mr. Fleming has unusual virtues: a fine eye for places—in this book there are admirable accounts of Saratoga and Las Vegas—an ability to convey his own interest in the mechanics of gambling, and an air of knowledgeableness that many writers in this genre lack." ( Times Literary Supplement)
"His hero, James Bond, fulfils every male fantasy known to me." ( The Spectator)
"James Bond is one of the most cunningly synthesized heroes in crime-fiction." ( Observer)

Another generic Bond adventure with the usual trimmings. Bond's mission is to investigate and disrupt a diamond smuggling racket, leading him to America.
- Fleming's attention to detail is as present as ever, be it horse racing, card games in casino's or describing large steam trains.
- The plot and characters just didn't thrill me in this one. The book was okay, the characters were okay. The stand out was Felix Leiter who is my favourite Bond character.
- As with most Bond novels, be prepared for heavy doses of racism and sexism. In particular be aware of the Bond girl in this story. Her backstory has sexual assault and rape in it and subsequent trauma and this is dealt with by suggesting that the right man could fix her.
A fun book for a seasoned Bond fan. New fans should start with Casino Royale.

4 stars.
Damian Lewis does a good job with the narration. The story is in some ways better than the film. By this I mean more plausible and real. The tension created by Damian at the end of the book was superb. Great stuff.!

iconic 007 novel
obviously there had to be a character in this with the name Tiffany Case…
a diamond, this book.
the fourth action-adventure instalment from the original 007 spy series which became so incredibly popular. written in the 50s, a collectible at this point.

Excellent all round
Another excellent Bond novel & reading in this series. It shows the depth and breadth of talent of English actors that each Bond book is read by a different actor. Despite his rather posh voice Lewis does an excellent, subtle Bond and his accent for the American heroine is natural and convincing. Incidentally, the plot of the movie bears little resemblance to the book.

Another great Bond story.
As the film wasn’t may favourite in the Bond universe I thought I’d give the book a try and see how it compares. I enjoyed this more for sure. Damian Lewis gives a great performance and the story arc is interesting.

Bond on Holiday
Huge fan... but this is one of the weaker Bond series books. Tasked with closing a diamond smuggling pipeline in the USA, bond manages to take in some horse-racing, a mud bath and a cruise.
Tiffany Case is pretty two-dimensional and only seems memorable because of the abuse she has suffered at the hands of the LAPD.
Damien Lewis does a great job of bringing the world to life through pretty slow narration.
That said, it has a great opening, a great millionaire villain (who barely gets any proper prose devoted to him), car chase and a fight scene on a cruise.
If you're a fan and are after a Bond fix maybe pick another.
