About this listen
In 1970, Harold Stamp, a retarded 20-year-old, was convicted on disputed evidence and a retracted confession of brutally murdering his grandmother. Less than three years later he is dead, driven to suicide by isolation and despair.
Thirty years on, Jonathan Hughes, an anthropologist specialising in social stereotyping, comes across the case by accident. He finds alarming disparities in the evidence and has little doubt that Stamp's conviction was a terrible miscarriage of justice. But how far is Hughes prepared to go in the search for justice? Is the forgotten story of one friendless young man compelling enough to make him leave his books and face his own demons? And with what result?
If Stamp didn't murder Grace Jeffries then somebody else did....

Good plot
I enjoyed the story but wasn’t entirely convinced by the characters. Also, the extraneous padding, especially the email addresses, are irritating in an audiobook.

Drear from start to finish
I remember reading Minette Walters first novels and enjoying them very much. I’ve never read this one so gave it a go. Goodness me! Utterly, utterly turgid. Unrealistic characters, tedious repetition, and to top it all, a boring narrator. I don’t know why I listened to the end, it could have been edited down to half its length. And having got to the end… I was none the wiser. Very disappointing.

Dull
The narrator is robotic and the book consists of boring repetitive details. I fell asleep halfway through chapter 2 and woke up to the same boring details.

Shame about the reader
Minette Walters is a superb novelist, and this book is absolutely up to her usual standard. But what a pity that the reading is so pedestrian and monotonous, spoiling the pleasure. Disappointing.

Meandering, boring
After rwo or three attempts I had to give up on this. Dreary, full of extraneous detsil, with every character having a complex, about their origin or education or similar. Even the narrator sounded bored. And why do so many narrators not bother finding out how to pronounce foreign words? Very lazy and irtitating.
