About this listen

A locked-room mystery in a near-future world of politics and alien diplomacy.

Lydia works as translator for the Logi cultural attaché to Earth. They work well together, even if the act of translating his thoughts into English makes her somewhat wobbly on her feet. She’s not the agency’s best translator, but what else is she going to do? She has no qualifications and no discernible talent in any other field. So when tragedy strikes and Lydia finds herself at the center of an intergalactic incident, her future employment prospects look dire—that is, if she can keep herself out of jail! But Lydia soon discovers that help can appear from the most unexpected source....

Terrible American accents from British narrator really distracted from the story: saying "Canader" instead of 'Canada',
Premise of the story was interesting, but my interest fell away towards the last third.

Bad faux American accent

The narrator added flavour with different tones and accents (eventhough 1 was a bit painful to hear-Undine). The lead's side comments were often hilarious. I grieve for Fitz and have been waiting for the lead to process that but fell short in the end. The twist in the end was not expected though. Overall, it was an easy listen.

Sci-fi Whodunnit

Could read a lot more of these - milieu and personalities. Would like to get even more about these aliens and these slightly future times. Reader brilliant. Managed to give all the large cast of characters a unique voice. Yes, even the jokey but not far off the mark Vassar deb. Altogether Ace!

Really good Who-Done-It with ALIENS

Loved the story most of the narration is okay, but the voice the narrator uses for 'Mum' and 'Madeline' are so irritating that I couldn't listen anymore. The narrator really spoils the experience.

Narrator lets it down

Following a translator who speaks for the alien race the Logi, but ends up feeling drunk after too much translation, you can tell this book has a good sense of humour from the start. But through the fun Eddie Robson also builds up a very interesting world and characters that draw you even more into the tale.

With technologies and social reporting that somewhat satires our own time, the story remains funny while also turning into a very solid mystery/ thriller. I won't say much more to avoid spoilers and because you should just listen to it yourself!

Would love to see more books in this world.

Fantastic fun

Although the first act is a little frustrating (it feels ponderous at times, and there are some odd narration errors), once the story gets going it just gets better and better.

The central mystery is intriguing and the finale does it justice, which is an impressive feat. The near future setting is thoughtfully crafted and has a fascinating and fresh take on how our current social ecosystems might evolve, but without patronising exposition or banal "what if phone but too much" criticism of social media and technology.

The protagonist is a delight and despite some flubs that didn't get edited out the narrator does a fantastic job of bringing her and the other characters to life.

Highly recommended.

Worth the Bumpy Start

Interesting concept for a storyline. At times a bit slow, not an Agatha Christie plot but overall enjoyable.
Gentle mystery with lots of side plots to keep you entertained.
