Summary

The flu pandemic of 1918 took millions of souls within a few short weeks. Except it wasn't flu, and death gave them back.

Seventeen-year-old Ella copes the best she can by caring for her war-injured father, scrubbing the floors, and slaying the undead that attack the locals. Like rats, these vermin spread pestilence with every bite. Ella's world collides with another when she nearly decapitates a handsome stranger - one who is very much alive.

Seth deMage, the new Duke of Leithfield, has returned to his ancestral home with a mission from the War Office: control the plague of vermin in rural Somerset. He needs help; he just didn't expect to find it in a katana-wielding scullery maid.

Working alongside Seth blurs the line between their positions, and Ella glimpses a future she never dreamed was possible. But in overstepping society's boundaries, Ella could lose everything - her home, her head, and her heart.

Could have done without the kiss scenes

This book has the potential to be so much more than it is. Ella could have been so much more kickass and instead we are left with a girl who wants the Duke for much of it. It’s disappointing to say the least that we get lumped with kiss scenes that are poorly written. I would much rather had faster paced action scenes.

Could have been so much better

I loved the premise of this - Cinderella with zombies! But to be honest, I feel like with such a fun idea so much more could have been done with the story. It couldn't quite decide whether it wanted to be serious or silly, and in doing so failed at both. The writing style was also not great and at times a bit cringeworthy, especially the romantic scenes.

Cinderella meets the Walking Dead

It a lovely easy read type story with some twists. The First World War finishes and a pandemic sweeps the land. Its set in rural England. The Step family live up to their reputation. The zombies are graphic. It is a subversion of the genre as Cinderella is supposed to be a dutiful and gentle creature where as Ella carries around a blade to be-head the 'vermin'.

If you want a light easy listen then this one is for you. Nothing special but fun to listen to. Well presented.

Why is an American narrating a book set in the UK?

I thought the story was pretty meh, basically Cinderella with zombies, maybe something I would have liked when I was 12. It’s not the worst thing I’ve ever read but I don’t think I’ll be finishing the series. That narrator though… what on earth were they thinking? Get someone from Somerset, or at least someone who can do a passable accent!

A very enjoyable audiobook

An interesting version of Cinderella set post world war 1 during a zombie outbreak. Great story and characters. Loved the final twist.
