Summary

The remarkable, emotional debut novel, both funny and moving, which was longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction, from the critically acclaimed Andrea Levy, author of the Orange Prize-winning Small Island and the Man Booker-shortlisted The Long Song.

'Better opportunity'—that's why Angela's dad sailed to England from America in 1948 on the Empire Windrush. Six months later her mum joined him in his one room in Earl's Court....

Twenty years and four children later, Mr Jacob has become seriously ill and starts to move unsteadily through the care of the National Health Service. As Angela, his youngest, tries to help her mother through this ordeal, she finds herself reliving her childhood years, spent on a council estate in Highbury.

Best so far

This is the third book I’ve read by this author and although the other books were very enjoyable this narrative really drew me in from beginning to end. Superbly read.

Touching storyline

Great writing and beautifully narrated. Will now get all of Andrea Levy’s books on audiobooks. I already have Small Island in paperback but will get it on audiobook.

Excellent nuances

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. I had already read it, years ago. This time around I loved every word, and sound even more.

Excellent moving and relatable

Everything - amusing relevant and thought provoking- and very reminiscent of life dealing with a parents decline

Quite Sad

I have read a few Andrea Leavy books now and whilst they all deal with heavy topics I found this one pretty bleak in comparison. For me personally I would recommend but the performance was fantastic just be prepared for a sad read.
