About this listen
"We’re not at parkrun any more," I mutter to myself, quietly longing for the presence of nice marshals in high-visibility vests.
Failure Is an Option is the story of an average runner who sets out to discover just how far he can go. With the support (and misgivings) of his family, and aware that his quickest years are behind him, Matt Whyman leaves the Saturday morning 5K to push towards 100-mile ultramarathons and beyond. By slowing things down to run a very long way, he joins a growing number of men and women from all walks of life striving to do something extraordinary.
A newcomer to a world that can often seem off-limits, Matt finds his feet as an ultrarunner by learning the hard way. He battles monster hallucinations on endurance races spanning day and night, loses himself on tantalising trails across landscapes far from home, and forges bonds with fellow competitors in which small, kind gestures mean more than any medal. Determined to touch the boundaries of his running world before it starts to shrink, ultimately Matt sets his sights on a six-day mountain ultra that even hardened veterans consider to be the most formidable on earth: the Dragon’s Back Race.
Brimming with good humour, honesty, and joy, Failure Is an Option pits ambition against ability to uncover human truths that resonate with us all. A mid-pack competitor who could win prizes for enthusiasm–if nothing else–Matt takes us on a journey far beyond his comfort zone and with no guaranteed outcome of success. The results are entertaining from start to finish, often very funny and at times deeply moving.

Not just a story about running
As with all good adventure stories, this is not a book just about the activity being undertaken. Which is a good job really, I’m not a runner and don’t pick up books like this to learn about technique. This is a super interesting story about human endeavour, pushing limits, and learning important lessons through adventure.
I enjoyed it, very much. The book is full of amusing and honest anecdotes, each with a nod back to the important idea that adventure is powerful. Well worth a listen if you like stories about ordinary people who find a passion for something big.

A must for every day trail and ultra runners!
I nearly missed my turn off the motorway on the drive home from work last week as I was so engrossed in this (audio) book. Matt Whyman is a really engaging writer (and narrator) and what I loved most about his book is that he is just a normal person, like you or I, which made it a whole lot more relatable and inspiring than other running books. Having just had a child myself and now feeling rather unfit, this book has given me hope that one day I will be fit enough (and have enough time!) to run a race like the Dragon’s Back. A warm, funny and down to earth book - highly recommended.

Superhuman Efforts That You Can Relate To
I was gifted the audiobook after having read the physical copy and, appropriately, have listened to it whilst out running myself.
I enjoyed the format and timeline: from the title you might guess how it all ends and the story seems to start at the end but it's an engaging narrative, which takes with from the author's early efforts in running.
Throughout the book, the theme is one of setback, falling down and getting back up again. Whether it's physical limitations, managing family life, a creeping dependence on alcohol or injury, everything felt relatable.
I've read/listened to many similar books but this stands out as one where you can empathize with the storyteller, whether you're a non-runner, completed several ultras, have a family to support you or are single. There's no macho bravado either.
Great story, awesome journey!

fascinating story
Like the author I was useless at running at school then grew to live it, though nowhere near his level I understand the addiction and passion.

Both funny and emotional
Really enjoyed listening to Matt’s journey into running marathons and ultras. It was very inspiring and found myself googling some of his races and adding them to my own bucket list. A great audio.

Highly recommended
I listened to this audio book whilst out running and the miles flew by as I was so immersed in the story. Matt's narration and story telling was very relatable, with a few laugh out loud moments. Highly recommended this book, to anyone who enjoys an adventure even if a non runner.

Something for every runner
I was sent this as a review copy, but I’d say the same if I’d bought it.
I’m a multi-day trekker who started running to get quicker, as such there’s much in this that should horrify me (and does), but the tales of getting lost, oh so lost are so well told and with such humility that I can forgive.
Listening to a fast runner learning to be slow, learning the love of gear selection as their horizons are expanded by the hills they learn to love mirrors in reverse my experiences as a plodder…
The similarities of lock down - watching the documentaries of FKTs and insane races bought a smile on my face and jealousy as I was shielding and couldn’t keep my running up.
That jealously, and that of a slow runner to a fast, is tempered by the love of running that comes through so my hope to listeners who get turned off early is stucco with it!

Enjoyable and inspiring
A very enjoyable listen from Matt. Inspiring too, as sometimes life doesn’t go to plan but you can be realistic and positive still. Your stars don’t always quite align the way you want, and that’s ok.

An intriguing read but with frustrating moments
I think the author should be congratulated for his honesty as it is scary to make our failures and mistakes public. Some people, myself included, have avoided some failures in the past by never 'giving it a go' in order to protect our ego from having to fail. Therefore I think Matt did a great job writing a book on failing which is likely less 'appealing' that writing about inspiring successes.
Overall I enjoyed the book and really felt some emotional connection with Matt. I really wanted him to do succeed and do well so I think overall the performance and storytelling of this title is good. That being said, the emotional connection could turn to frustration where a little bit of preparation could have prevented certain issues (knowing the route for runs when part of a team for example) but I suppose that's a double edged sword really because I wouldn't have been frustrated if I hadn't been so involved in the story.
