E.C.R. Lorac
About this listen
First published in 1944, Fell Murder sees E.C.R. Lorac at the height of her considerable powers as a purveyor of well-made and traditional detective fiction. The book presents a fascinating 'return of the prodigal' mystery set in the later stages of the Second World War, amidst the close-knit farmerfolk community of Lancashire's lovely Lune valley. The Garths had farmed their fertile acres for generations.
Garthmere Hall itself was old before Flodden Field, and here hot-tempered Robert Garth, still hale and hearty at 82, ruled his household with a rod of iron. The peaceful dales and fells of the North country provide the setting for this grim story of murder.

Engaging and lots of fun
Great story, evocatively written. I would have preferred a bit more MacDonald who arrived rather late on the scene but otherwise excellent. Another brilliant narration by Kris Dyer.

Well written mystery, excellent narration
I thoroughly enjoyed this 1940’s mystery, The landscape and characters are beautifully drawn and I found the puzzle interesting and cleverly plotted. The narrator is excellent and he brings out the time and landscape well. The characters in the book are well drawn and the narration brings these to life. I hope more Golden age of Crime books including those of E C R Lorac will be recorded and using this narrator.

Excellent story
This is a great crime classic from an author I’m just getting to know. The characters are real and believable. MacDonald is a joy! The descriptions of the countryside are beautiful and the plot is really good. The narration is excellent. What’s not to like? I now have several of Lorac’s books to explore.

Really evocative and characterful
At first I though the narration might be bland but it’s understated quality really grew on me and was consistent with the restraint of the characters and the narrative style. The story is an unromanticised, engaging and evocative insight into what it was like to be a farmer in a remote community during the second world war and the mystery is tightly constructed.

A mixed bag
On the whole this was a pleasant listen. The narrator made a few errors in the reading. It was a different style of who do it. A steady pace of detection. Not a pot boiler. Not my favourite but I will maybe try another book by this author.
