About this listen
The reverend Dodd, vicar of the quiet Cornish village of Boscawen, spends his evenings reading detective stories by the fireside - but heaven forbid that the shadow of any real crime should ever fall across his seaside parish. But the vicar's peace is shattered one stormy night when Julius Tregarthan, an ill-tempered magistrate, is found at his house in Boscawen with a bullet through his head.
The local police inspector is baffled by the lack of clues. Suspicion seems to fall on Tregarthan's niece, Ruth - but surely that young woman lacks the motive to shoot her uncle dead in cold blood. Luckily for Inspector Bigswell, the reverend Dodd is on hand.

Good old fashioned story
Nice old fashioned and enjoyable. I like the way the characters build, almost an old Miss Marple.

Cornish Coast Mystery
A good story. But it’s one I would prefer to read rather than listen to.

Great classic
A classic crime mystery with interesting angles.
Can’t wait to see how John Bude developed his writing in later crime novels as here, the characters are sometimes a bit simplistic in their reactions. Still, a very enjoyable tale.
As for the narrator, he’s quite good in giving each character its own voice, but his narration voice has a tone of continuous boredom which makes it hard to engage. I had to rewind several times and start a chapter all over. His voices though, are much more engaging.

Really enjoyable
Lovely story well narrated. Just the right amount of descriptive storyline to get the feel for the cast in the mystery and I didn't guess who did it. Recommend it for light reading, along Christie lines rather than Rendall

Good Idea Poor Execution
Any additional comments?
The plot build-up was poor, a situation not helped by Ben Allen's reading which throughout the book seemed to lack, what I can best describe as. a "sense of conviction".

Enjoyable
Interesting and clear plot but too drawn out at the end. As with The Lake District Murder and theSussex Downs Murder, this was a period piece. However it has not stood the test of time so well. I am glad that the author dropped the clunky device of the vicar and doctor as additional detectives in his later books.

Another enjoyable British crime
Once again a good long narrative from the British Crime series ...... And ...... Once again, helped with the painting and decorating.
Still painting to be done, so I feel another one must be on the agenda. Didn't think I would ever enjoy decorating so much.
