My first collection of folklore horror and it was such a fun and enjoyable read! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator Aubrey Parsons greatly impersonated all the characters, changing intonation and accents, so that the legends and myths became truly alive.

As the title suggests, these are perfect to read or listen by the fire in a winter night, when a sudden light outside the window catches our attention (be careful not to look at it), or when a friend comes in with an ancient book, or when whilst reading the news, you learn about kids disappearing without any apparent reason.

I loved how most of the stories were interconnected through the diary of Elsbeth Although all the stories were entertaining and interesting, one stayed with me and it was the last one, telling about a demon eating on humans’ blood shed through violence, feasting especially during wars (of which we have more and more every day). This felt very actual and in my opinion, not that much of a legend as well.

Living in the UK, I loved these stories set at the border of Shropshire and Powys (England and Wales, respectively), and I’m looking forward to more!

Thanks to the author for the opportunity to listen to it and this is my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed listening to these short stories. they are original and interesting and often feature an unexpected plot twist. they remind me a little of M R James although I would say these are actually better. the reader also does an excellent job.

This is an excellent book to curl up with on a dark windy and stormy night if you like to be scared to death! Well written with 10 short horror stories set in Shropshire and the Welsh borders. Dramatically narrated by Aubrey Parsons who brought the whole thing to life, or is it death?.... Highly Recommended.

This collection of short stories is ideal for reading, or in my case, listening to in relatively short bursts. The shorter tales last around 20 minutes, with the longest chapter lasting just over an hour.

Mostly set in an other-worldly version of Shropshire during the early twentieth century, the tales are loosely linked, mostly through the writings of Elspeth McGinnity. They are in chronological order but could be enjoyed separately, without any real need to have read/heard the previous tales.

I found the writing to be well paced and for me it painted vivid pictures of the locations, characters and situations played out in each tale. This was boosted further by the great narration, which gave a dramatic flourish to the intriguing events.

This collection of short stories, for me were perfect. Each different and I found very well written. I'm not usually a huge fan of this genre of material, but that being said I found these to be an interesting and imaginative collection. A great audible book and I will definitely be getting more of P A Sheldon's stories.
