Summary
A world fallen under a plague of seven billion walking dead. A tiny island nation the last refuge of the living. One team of the world's most elite special operators. The dead, these heroes, humanity's last hope, all have...Arisen.
When the Zombie Apocalypse came, one country had shut down its borders in response to a major terrorist attack. Now Fortress Britain is the last bastion of the living with 50 million beleaguered survivors facing down a world of 7 billion animated corpses. And when civilization fell, one international team of supremely elite special operators was being assembled for a nearly impossible mission, deployed out of the SAS barracks at Hereford. Supremely trained and armed, always the most skilled, resolved, and unstoppable amongst us, now the commandos of Alpha team are humanity's last best hope for survival. Searching through the detritus of fallen Europe, scavenging pharmaceutical labs for clues to a vaccine that might bring humanity back from the brink, now they are tasked with one last desperate operation. They must cross the Atlantic aboard the world's only remaining supercarrier, insert by air into the very middle of a dead continent, and then fight their way on foot through a city of 3 million ravening dead guys. But these Zulus will not be like any zombies they have ever fought before...

Good but annoying
I have really enjoyed other books read by R C Bray but this one was really annoying. Someone British should have explained how we pronounce Folkestone, Malvern, Hereford, Herefordshire and Risborough before asking him to narrate this book. A voice coach for English accents wouldn't have gone amiss either as at times he sounded like Dick van Dyke as the mockney sweep from Mary Poppins. I found it very distracting and this wasn't the case when he narrated the Mountain Man series.
Anyway apart from the awful mistakes alluded to above the story was fast paced, immersive and a little bonkers, just what I like in my post apocalyptic fiction. No doubt I shall wince through the rest of the series as he mangles English accents and place names but I liked the story enough to want to listen to them all.
I would recommend this audio book but if you're British take a deep breath first.

Not what I expected
I am not a fan of horror or gore fest so was not hopefull that this book would be entertaining ....but it was free on Audible Plus so I took a chance.
It is excellent. More a military Sci fi but with zombies instead of aliens.
Well worth going out on my favourite genres.

And this is a cracking story. Action driven and well written. If you love a zombie story then this is the book for you.

Decent prequel if you want to start series
So this was an interesting listen, setting the stage for books to come. Bits n pieces happen, but its all stage setting and introducing the characters and background. I cant remember some of the characters as there are so many, and some I dont care about, so, for me, I'm not 100% sold yet but entertained enough to try one more book.
I adore RC Bray but somebody needed to teach him the pronunciations of some of the places in Britain, that grated. Plus, for the English, we dont tend to think Slough is on the edge of London so some geographical points came from a non British perspective. This was a side irritant.
I hope the books develop well as there is promise but I am sitting on the fence a little at the moment.

Get past all the military termanology & its great
I was initially put off by the heavy military theme to this book when I started reading it and stopped after the first few chapters, however, listening is a whole different experience. The narration by RCBray is superb and I am now onto book 3! Excellent

Waaay too Technical
This was an okay read but I got distracted with the constant spec of types of guns and ammos which detracted from a very good zombie story. Great read for anyone into military and combat literature but not for the everyday zombie lit reader!

Totally awesome
Where does Fortress Britain rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best, totally awesome some of the best voice acting and some really high production values.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Fortress Britain?
When pred and juice turn up at a barracks room brawl with there weapons, night vision and very little else.
Which character – as performed by R. C. Bray – was your favourite?
All of alpha team, the reader really makes the characters live and breath.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I have read the novel previously and did read that in one sitting. Being an audio book adds a little extra Magic to the whole thing.
Any additional comments?
Initially was worried about how this would work as a audiobook but it rocks.

Absolute pleasure to listen to…
I think the authors got it just right in their description of this unthinkable, unfathomable devastation caused by so tiny a rogue strand of infected tissue. That both the infected undead and a small group of humans survived for over two years in bombed, water logged tunnel. Against huge odds stacked against them sets the stage for an epic nature vs nurture battle. A fight to the death for primacy between a hyper evolving (in)human biological imperative VS an uber adaptive ‘survival of the species’ social imperative. Very much looking forward to seeing how it all plays out …cry havoc Mr Bray and let leash the dogs of war!
