Lama Yeshe didn't see a car until he was 15 years old.

In his quiet village, he and other children ran in fields with yaks and mastiffs. The rhythm of life was anchored by the pastoral cycles. Food was carefully apportioned and eaten together, everyone was family.

The arrival of Chinese army cars one day in 1959 changed everything.

In the wake of the deadly Tibetan Uprising, he escaped to India through the Himalayas to start over as a refugee. One of only 13 survivors out of 300 travellers, he spent the next few years in America, experiencing the excesses of the Woodstock generation before reforming in Europe.

Now in his 70s and a leading monk at the Samye Ling monastery in Scotland - the first Buddhist centre in the West - Lama Yeshe casts a hopeful look back at his momentous life. From his learnings on self-compassion and discipline to his trials and tribulations with loss and failure, his poignant story mirrors our own struggles.

It's a biography of the lama. Thrilling life story of his. I admire the Tibetan people even more for the endurance in communist regime after reading the book.

Very well written! An absolutely absorbing life story which is contemplated and seen through the wisdom of the dharma in each chapter. Inspiring!

The narrator had a very pleasant voice, but there was a disturbing change in sound level as if the narrator had to stop the recording and would then start it again in a lower/higher tone of voice. Ofcourse the whole book is probably not recorded in a single session, but this happeneded like 10 times within 10 minutes. In some chapters so often, that it was hard for me to keep my focus on what was said instead of how it was narrated.
Sadly, since the book is really worth a listen for everyone and I will still recommend it.

Very few books I have listened to give you the feeling that the author is truly opening their heart to you, the reader, as this one does. Not only is this an inspiring story of courage, determination, love and sacrifice, but also a glimpse into the mind of a truly wise and generous being. A pleasure and a privilege to read the book.

A superb book documenting the journey of an exile monk who finds the path. The author leaves Tibet during Mao's cultural revolution and flees to India and then on to Scotland and the united States. In the West he gets seducted by the free-love hippy era lifestyle and western materialism. He eventually hits rock bottom and bounces back to become one of the most revered western Buddhist Monks and pioneer of many things Buddhism in the west now largely takes for granted (temporary ordination and full femail ordination). The author narrates us through his five year solo retreat and through a series of three 49-day conplete sensory deprivation retreats.

An insightful and educational book, by a man who defied what life through at him and went on to become a great teacher.
