About this listen

Victoria James is at home awaiting a call from Downing Street. She's desperate for the telephone to ring but mindful of the impact a promotion could have on her husband and daughter. When she receives the summons, high office does indeed await her, and life as she knows it will never be the same.

As a young, attractive minister, Victoria will be living firmly in the public eye, challenged in her views at every turn. But nothing prepares her for what ultimately throws her off-balance: a love affair with a married man so well known that it can only be a matter of time before everyone knows their secret.

Critic reviews

"The parliamentary plot is skilfully and subtly woven into pages and pages of wonderful descriptions." ( Spectator)

I wasn't sure what to expect of this first novel but was intrigued enough to want to hear it. Sandra Howard has done herself proud. This is an engaging and well written book. Above all it is a damn good story that keeps you gripped from page one with full bodied characters and a stimulating plot. The quality of the reading is very important too and can make or break an Audio book for me and this was sympathetically done. Carry on Mrs Howard!

Absolutely loved this book - enjoyed the political storyline along with the romance.
Brilliantly narrated by Jilly Bond as always!

I'm about two thirds of the way through this one, but I'm sorry I just can't keep going. I found it shallow and frustrating. The central female character is supposed to be a minister who is on her way to great things. I found her far too pathetic to imagine she could be going anywhere. How does she manage to put up with the two men in her life? But probably even more annoying is the narrator's voice. All the male voices are the same - gruff and angry. Even when one of them says something tender or even funny it sounds like he's angry. Perhaps that makes it seem even more one dimensional that it really is. I may eventually finish it and it's always possible that it will improve....

Annoying!
