Summary

Good book, narration not always clear
Another great Wilbur Smith story, just spoilt by the narration being muffled and difficult to hear at times.

A tad over the top
Golden Fox isn’t one of the best of the Courtney series. It’s the first to have left me with a nasty hint of racism. Previously I felt that Wilbur Smith was simply and truthfully reflecting South African and colonial attitudes of the period. With this book I felt that at times the racism felt gratuitous.
Sean Barrett’s portal of African voices is generally good but Niki’s child’s voice sounded grotesque to me.

Stunning brilliant as always!
a master craftsman of English literature, and so well delivered by Sean Barret. This book will be sure to have you on the edge of your seat. it is well worth following the whole of the Cortney series to glean the most from this rich story of a troubled and high-powered family.

Russian 'James Bond' International Thriller
Ramon epitomises a cruel charming spy who entraps Isabella in his web. The first time I read the book, I was frustrated with Isabella as it seemed she was helpless and a bit stupid in allowing Ramon to control her but when I listened to the audiobook, I fully understood the true extent of Ramon's ruthlessness. The reasons behind the Communist success in Africa was their ability to torture, kill and bribe the way through any opposition. Ramon is a Cuban so it was fascinating to see the effect of a relatively small nation on destroying large parts of Africa such as Ethiopia and Mozambique. I loved Wilbur's descriptions of London, Spain, Cuba and Russia which provided a welcome change from his classic Africa. The Communist red tide which systematically eliminated not just individuals but their entire families including children to destroy the human will was also used in other parts of the world like China and the killing fields of Cambodia. Ramon is a truly unforgettable character who will haunt your nightmares. This is a true Wilbur Classic and quite unique in its scope.

Thrilling but chilling
As someone who has lived in South Africa for 75 years the Courtney series has brought back memories of the recent history of my country. So much of these books is based on real people and events.
Vicky Ghama is so obviously based on Winnie Mandela.

Another great Courtney novel.....but!
Another great adventure story by Wilbur. Eight books into this series and I just wish there could be a bit of character variation. For example the females charachters all have "perfect breasts with rose coloured nipples that point at the moon". Just for once couldn't they have one tat bigger than the other with inverted nipples that Henry the Hoover couldn't rectify? The males are invariably "the most handsome man you have ever seen with golden hair and a stomach you can iron on". Couldn't They just for once have a bit of a beer belly and hair that stuck up at the back? They would be more relatable and we wouldn't think any less of them for it. The same descriptions for different characters get a bit samey.

Another classic from Wilbur Smith
I literally couldn't put this down and finished it in 3 days. This is probably my second favourite of his books after Eagle in the Sky.
