Summary

The thrilling short-story collection featuring Jeff VanderMeer, Karen Traviss, and Eric Nylund - part of the expanded universe based on the New York Times best-selling video game series Halo!

When humanity expanded beyond the safety of Earth to new stars and horizons, it never dreamed what dangers would be encounter there. When the theocratic alien juggernaut known as the Covenant declared war upon the fragile human empire, millions of lives were lost - but millions of heroes also rose to the challenge. In such a far-reaching conflict, not many tales of the brave have a chance to become legend.

This collection of 11 stories dives into the depths of the vast Halo universe, not only from the perspective of those who fought and died to save humanity, but also from those who vowed to wipe it out of existence.

Brilliant performances by the voice actors!

The stories were fantastic and great insight into the Halo universe. But as an audiobook, buying a doubt the voice work was brilliant. Along with Holter Graham narrating we got Frank O’Connor, Jen Taylor, and the Master Chief himself Steve Downs!

This was the last book on my list of thirty-one Halo novels and anthologies that I was to read before the release of Halo Infinite! I’ve finally finished THE DAY OF RELEASE in my country and I’m very pleased that this was the last book. It filled a bunch of holes for me and has only made me excited to play Infinite!

Anyway, if you’re looking for a good start into the extended Halo universe then I suggest you read/listen to Evolutions first!

Great stories but narration could use some work

Most of the stories in this collection are a great listen. I especially enjoyed "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" and "The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole". "The Mona Lisa" was also really good. Didn't really like "Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss" until I listened to the audio series "Hunt the Truth", which gives some context to the character of Dasc Gevadim. Which brings me onto the narration. Fresh off Hunt the Truth, it's possible I've been spoiled, because that series has some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. Most of these stories are narrated passably but there are quite a few instances of mispronounced words, or tone changes where the narrator ends one day and picks up the next. Had more thought and care been given to the narration, I probably would have given this 5 stars.

Amazing short stories!

What an amazing mix of stories filling in more gaps in the lore that makes Halo great!
