Summary
A paranormal women's fiction novel for anyone who thought adventure and magic stopped at 40. Guess again, it's just the beginning.
I never expected I'd be one of those people who had a midlife crisis. Sure, I'm over 40 and married, but my kids are grown and moved out. Life is steady, if predictably boring.
That all changes when my husband asks for a divorce and my whole world crashes. Everything I thought I knew, everything I am, gone in an instant. But I am not about to give up. After all, at my age, technically, I'm only halfway there.
I am ready to tackle my do-over; my chance to become the me I've always dreamed of. Starting with moving into my late grandma's cottage and adopting a new kitten.
However, my new life is a little odder than expected. Old books suddenly appearing in my house. Neighbors going missing. A supposed lake monster and a strange man who likes to skulk around with an axe.
I'm going to need to lean on my friends, new and old, to help me navigate my midlife crisis. Together maybe we will find a way to beat the family curse ruining my second chance at life.
Contains mature themes.

A Great Mystery With a Sprinkling of Paranormal.
I originally read the ebook on 10 July 2020
Halfway There has been one of my favourite stories that I've read by Eve Langlais. It is a classic mystery story with the promise of supernatural phenomenon just out of sight. I found it very easy to read, the plot had enough mystery to keep me wondering what would happen next. There were also quite a few scenes that sent chills dancing down my spine. However, things are kept "cozy".
Nicole Poole is a lovely narrator. Her performance brought all the characters to life. Nicole adjusted her voice to convey the various emotions of the narrative as well as the dialogue.
I love the concept of the PWF genre. Paranormal Women's Fiction where the protagonists are over 40yrs old. I'm a menopausal woman within spitting distance of 50 myself and loved how true-to-life Naomi was. Although my own family situation is much happier.
I could connect with our protagonist, Naomi, and felt her situation to my core. Although she hasn't started off as a traditional badass heroine, I have a feeling she'll become one as this series progresses. I must admit to getting very frustrated with her at times throughout this book. However, I have learned that these traits are very common in women who've been in long term situations like Naomi's.
I think Halfway There is a well balanced story. It's primarily women's fiction about second-chance sort of coming-of-age. With some humour, mystery, thriller and relationship threads woven through.
There's no perilous life-or-death cliffhanger (woo!hoo!) but a lovely epilogue and tantalising hook at the end instead. I'm looking forward to listening book 2.

Sooooo slow
This should be a short story. I’m very concerned with the repetitive assertion that 40 is old🤷🏼♀️ the manner in which Naomi’s friends keep her in the dark and call her stupid is quite sad. Her daughter is committing adultery but gets upset that her father has had an affair and treated her mom badly. She never gets called out on that. The best part of the story is the last chapter. Depressing and going nowhere. It’s a pity because the storyline is rich with potential, just not executed properly.😓

Not for a Fantasy lover of mature age
Just too damn American. Just like canned laughter and too loud just like the inane TV Programs the UK younger generation seem to favour. Turn brain off and press play.

Depressing
Whining, stupid, unattractive, obtuse, totally devoid of any redeeming features - that’s the heroine. Too much angst, tedious descriptions of her ineffective meanderings, too slow and … well just let’s say I am not interested in the next episode in this tedious series.

Too slow
The storyline seems okay but moves along at such a slow pace that I struggled to maintain an interest. Disappointing as I normally enjoy a mid-life MC. Won't be, buying book 2.
