About this listen

When the world of Armageddon is attacked by orks, the Black Templars Space Marine Chapter are amongst those sent to liberate it. Chaplain Grimaldus and a band of Black Templars are charged with the defence of Hive Helsreach from the xenos invaders in one of the many battle zones.

But as the orks' numbers grow and the Space Marines' numbers dwindle, Grimaldus faces a desperate last stand in an Imperial temple. Determined to sell their lives dearly, will the Black Templars hold on long enough to be reinforced, or will their sacrifice ultimately be in vain?

Brilliant

Brilliant story and amazing narrator, definitely worth a listen. "The hero of Helsreach. As if there was only one."

Brilliant!

One of the best novels to come out of the Black Library, Aaron Dembski Bowden is a master of story telling and world building. Very good and on the whole generally likeable characters; an excellent portrayal of Grimaldus. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the 40k universe.

I wasn't expecting much

Wasn't expecting much as it's titled as a battle series.

Really gives the sense that all is lost, and some great characters along the way.

Front runner of the black library

Personally of all the black library this is the best and a great stand alone.

Purging the alien with righteous fury!

Really enjoyed this dark and gritty story, most of it told from Grimaldus' perspective. You do very easily find yourself becoming invested in the characters. I especially liked the stark differences between the Black Templars and the Salamanders.

It is an older book now and would love to see a sequel but it is a very well told, self contained story.

What an amazing book and brilliant narration

Dembski-Bowden is an absolute ace at the 40K books and this is no exception. He manages to draw out the humanity (such as it is) in the characters and backed up with Keeble's fab narration the catastrophe of Helsreach really comes to life, er death, well you get the idea. I love that he can write base humans as well as Space Marines and integrate them into one text giving a different perspective on each's actions. I have five D-B audiobooks (Spear, Talon, Black Legion, First Heretic and this) plus the print of the Night Lords series. All are worth your time or credit but I would say while the Talon of Horus is still his finest audiobook (go download that now) this is a very close second.

A great book about a siege. A Space Marine story that is stolen by mybnew favourite Guardsmen. ADB delivers again.
