Dungeons & Dragons for Organisations

Quite possibly the most boring book I have ever listened to, once I got used to the semi robotic machine gun style narration. The sentiment of Holocracy is laudable, hierarchies are increasingly useless business structures, and yes evolutionary concepts, methods and tools are the way forward. We live and work in webs not pyramids. But oh boy, this is how to design an organisation if: you've high functioning autism, spent years of your life playing Dungeons and Dragons, grew up a dweeb, graduated to techie geek, got employed as a nerd, confused the arse out of everyone by trying to brain dump everything you know into the answer to every question you're asked, got sad, dropped out to smoke weed and then woke up one morning and said, I'm going to run my own business. Then when in true self motivating style, you had a tidy up, found your old Dungeons and Dragons set and thought, oh, I've got an idea. Annoyingly, every hour or so the mind numbing stuff gets interrupted by a fabulous nugget of insight, so you just got to keep listening. I did and it was worth it.

overly Simplistic. however some useful ideas

useful ideas. does not tackle heirachy of competence. the person doing the work is not always the best placed to make decisions. the opening story illustrates this. as a novice pilot he was not competent at making decisions involving the mechanics of the plane.

Not a self improvement book

This is a great book if you own a company and need to completely change the way it is run for the modern working world that we live in.

As a lifetime employee, I totally resonate with the basis of the book. It helps people who are disengaged and feel they don't have the power to do anything positive in the workplace to understand that there is another way. It also helps managers who have tried everything to make positive changes yet fail every time.

I read a lot of self improvement books. This is not really a book in that category per se. I would give this book a five star review if you are a company owner, and a three star review if you simply love reading self improvement books like me.

A blueprint for the future of team working

Self-managing teams that have the power to make decisions without being swamped in bureaucracy sounds like a boring concept- but it is part of a revolution that can transform the business world. Holacracy is a blueprint or off-the-shelf solution for companies to adopt and implement to be a part of this exciting future. Superbly written with great wisdom and clarity. The author makes complex topics easy to understand. I’m likely to put it into practice in my company..
