Breathing new (un)life into great, classic tales.

As a lover of the classic ghost stories of E. A. Poe and M. R James as well as the supernatural terror of H. P. Lovecraft and August Derleth I never tire of rereading their tales but audio versions are hard to come by outside of old, crackle recordings and unsuitable jolly narrators.
Only Horrorbabble have managed to capture a fantastic selection of stories, arranged in an order that slowly builds the terror and narrated in such a perfect way as to elicit images of darkened, shadowy studies wreathed in pipe smoke where tales are recounted over glasses of strong whisky.
I own most of what they've made and every single production is wonderfully created and there really is no reason to look elsewhere if you're seeking a reason to leave the light on at night.

The best source of classic weird fiction audio

Firstly, this is a great collection of weird fiction. It's a gem to find a collection this large of so many of the great writers and big names. All in one purchase! Sadly, many weird fiction writers didn't get the credit they deserved until more recent times, given that horror and sci fi was seen as low-brow and published mainly in pulp fiction magazines and books. But many of the great writers we know now, and big names of horror films even today, all trace inspiration back to the writers featured in this anthology.

Secondly, credit to the narrator, Ian Gordon. His enthusiasm and style is totally fitting for these tales and make their rendition highly enjoyable. Even for those few who find his style not to their taste, it will still grow on you and is undeniably appropriate to the material.

It is also a great compliment to Ian Gordon that I found his own stories equally enjoyable to the classics included in this collection. He is a good example of how fans of a genre can reproduce its classic tropes in a modern context. This is more than just carrying on a tradition, it's actually very exciting enjoying the new material that is produced as a result.

Horrorbabble are bringing to light for free on the internet many great works of fiction that are otherwise hard to find in print or don't deserve to be forgotten. Yes, M,R. James and some others have always been well-known, H.P Lovecraft is an icon, but masters like Clark Ashton Smith, Algernon Blackwood, and even Robert Bloch and Robert E. Howard are inexpicably little-known, despite being some of the best writers of any genre, not just weird fiction. In a climate where people are hunting to cash in on the recent success of Lord of the Rings, and horror is so huge, it's bizzaree that this material is being overlooked.

I hope Horrorbabble's website and this collection help connect these neglected stories to a new audience. Although many stories included here can be found for free on the Horrorbabble site, they deserve the income from this audible purchase for their work and the convenience of having all these tales collected together on the audible app.

Lots of good stuff

I like the readers voice but he’s a bit monotonus and doesent do a lot of character acting. The stories are mostly good.

Great collection; Great reader!

I've listened to (and have bought) a lot of HorrorBabble's work on Bandcamp and have very much enjoyed it and this collection is no less enjoyable; a good mix which ranges from classic horror such as Machen, James & Lovecraft to the more Science Fiction inspired horror of Vonnegut. Ian Gordon has the most excellent voice & delivery for readings of this type :-)

Not Disappointed

The hours pass by without notice when I’m listening to this as the stories are great and I love the narrators voice but like others have said wish he would tone down the pretence of the “horror mode” stylings and pronunciations.
If it was read with just a little less overemphasis and moody exagerations it would be perfect 👌

Awful narration kills book

I’m afraid the narration by Ian Gordon completely destroys just about all of these short stories. Every story intoned in the same way so that one blurs into another.
