About this listen

Read by the author, Dr Michael Greger.

'This book may help those who are susceptible to illnesses that can be prevented with proper nutrition' – His Holiness the Dalai Lama

The international bestseller, Dr Michael Greger's How Not To Die, read by the author, gives effective, scientifically-proven nutritional advice to prevent our biggest killers. From heart disease, breast cancer, and prostate cancer, to high blood pressure and diabetes – it reveals the astounding health benefits that simple dietary choices can provide.

Why rely on drugs and surgery to cure you of life-threatening disease when the right decisions can prevent you from falling ill to begin with?

Based on the latest scientific research, How Not To Die examines each of the most common diseases to reveal what, how and why different foods affect us, and how increasing our consumption of certain foods and avoiding others can dramatically reduce our risk of falling sick and even reverse the effects of disease. It also shares Dr Greger's 'Daily Dozen' – the twelve foods we should all eat every day to stay in the best of health.

With emphasis on individual family health history and acknowledging that everyone needs something different, Dr Michael Greger offers practical dietary advice to help you live longer, healthier lives.

Having read a fair share of publications on cholesterol and heart disease, it seems to me that some parts of the book pertaining to this topic are incorrect. Otherwise, an interesting read.

Few misstatements

I have learnt so much, changed the way I eat but not in a tough way just adding to it, thank you very much as honestly I see the outcome of these changes being what me and my family needed to go to the next level

It's a really interesting book that explains the health benefits of a whole food diet using evidence based studies and goes into a lot of detail. It's repetitive at times and probably could have been shorter but worth a read if you're considering improving your diet and health.

I really liked the science behind the claims. Dr Greger reads it with enthusiasm and in parts made me laugh. It is a book I shall re-listen to in parts when I think I'd forgotten something. I'd recommend it to any person interested in what your body needs to thrive. Plant based eating is the only way for me, I am already vegan but, Dr Greger doesn't tell you you have to be vegan in this book, he shows you different aspects iof eating habits, it is up to the reader to make his/her choice on what to eat and exercise for their health in their life.

Anyone should read it.

Love his honesty regarding source studies, thorough explanations of pros and cons of foods, and the simple recipe and lifestyle recommendations to help implement healthy changes. Listening was best option for me with my little baby at home, but I think I'll also buy the printed copy as a reference for future. Appreciate that he is not selling products that may make him biased, and surprised to find he volunteers his information free of charge to the public. Have already been recommending this book to friends and family. You have to hear it from Gregor to really understand how and why to eat plant based (more at least).

Very informative and unbiased information.

With the book split into 2; the leading causes of death followed by the ways to help prevent these causes with the foods you eat, Greger offers honest and thoroughly researched knowledge into what he has discovered over the years of his career. The book asks questions about why the industries fuelling these epidemics continue to push their agenda, but equally addresses the reasons. As with any other Global Capitalist Corporation his answer quickly pinpoints the absolute single culprit: Profit.

Furthermore, he discusses how some national guidelines and recommendations have been watered down by the institutions promoting them. Preferring to offer a much hardened truth to his readers, with the opinion that once you're aware of these truths the power to carry them through is now within your hands, rather than being given a softened version based on what these institutions believe people are capable of accepting/achieving.

However, he does not obsess on these aspects, instead he looks at how people can help themselves in such a way that they don't need to throw an endless stream of money into pursuing the perfect solution - the "Silver Bullet" if you will.

The information and guidance offered in this book gives the reader a chance to choose an array of foods suited to the ways of eating they may already be familiar with, yet still encouraging further experimentation and branching out into habits of eating which they may not yet be comfortable with but are just as easy, convenient and beneficial.

I will be referring back to How Not to Die in the years to come, I'm sure. There's so much packed into its pages that as soon as I reached the end I was flicking back through to select the gems that I can start to integrate into the foods I already eat...Great Book...Highly recommend for those who are enthusiastic about nutrition and eating for their own good health.
