About this listen
Dusty Gold
College is weird. One second you're studying for a huge exam in integrated physics and the next you're secretly drooling over the sexy rugby player living in the dorm next door. The second after that, you're sharing a bed with that same Insta-famous jock, staring up at the ceiling and wondering what in gay heaven caused such a miraculous and terrifying thing.
Maybe inviting him to stay at my family's house for the summer wasn't the greatest idea I've ever had?
Brandon Reed
I freakin' loved college. I loved being able to play rugby the most; losing myself to the game, watching the crowds in the stadium grow bigger with every win. Rugby gave me an escape. Then Dusty Gold springs into my life. After we end up as surprise roomies, a spring busts on his bed and we go from roommates to snuggle buddies.
Snuggling somehow turns into staying with him over the summer at his family's animal sanctuary. Soon, I find myself falling hard for the handsome and shy nerd. I've got a messy past, though, and Dusty's got a bright future. Will my ghosts ruin us before we could ever really begin, or will we both get a once-in-a-lifetime shot at a happy ending?
Contains mature themes.

Sweet but a bit standard
Sweet (and a bit hot) story with no extraordinary things. Feelgood romance just plain and simple. Good narrator but not something you'd remember for long.

What a sweet story!
I really liked this! And the animals just added another layer for me as an animal lover, I’m happy with how these two ended up!
also the engagement at the end was so sweet!!
Also the slight angst was so nicely written and proves people with addictions can over come it for the better and come out on top. Such a beautiful story!

definitely worth a read
I was going to commend the author for keeping the angst to a minimum & not allowing Dusty's negative traits to take centre stage...
Unfortunately, towards the end, the author did allow Dusty's extremely melodramatic self to fly free & sadly after that, I couldn't really be reeled back in!
Up until that point, I thought Dusty & Brandon were ADORABLE & just so, so sweet together... they were the perfect foil for one another!
Brandon stole my heart from the get-go & Dusty kinda grew on me.
They both loved animals & we got cheetahs (one of my faves), otters, kitties, doggies (nothing beats dogs for me), horsies... like Brandon, I was very much in happy heaven in the sanctuary 🤗
Dusty has his anxieties & neurosis, but I thought the author handled it well, up until... he didn't 😬
Although, I can understand that Dusty would be upset finding out in that way, he literally made something that had absolutely NOTHING whatsoever to do with him & did not affect him in any way, all about himself!
He just went off on some irrational melodramatic tangent & even worse, the family left him wallowing as though it was in any way justified or normal!
That was something that called for some deep, meaningful conversation between the boys, but not Dusty acting as though he'd been betrayed & lied to!
I was kinda hoping that Dusty would arrive to the conclusion that he'd overreacted & also that Benji would tell him what he'd heard... mystery solved, but he kept his distance.
I don't think the twin's relationship was portrayed well. They seemed to get on, but were way too distant... almost like normal brothers... twins bonds are always greater & that was missing in this book!
Dusty's family were too enabling & Brandon's family were too harsh!
I'm a 3 chances kinda girl... it seemed that was the first time Brandon went off the rails & they all saw that it WAS an accident. Get your son some help, don't abandon him like that!
All in all, except the ending (IMO)... it was a fantastic listen & definitely worth a read!

loved it
Max is one of my favourite authors and so far I've loved everything I've read of his. I was about to boycott him if he made the wrong decision in chapter two, but its fine, he's still a favourite. The ending was worth it and it was all great!

The last 1/3 made me angry
The first part was super cutesy and fun, which was great. Then came the dreaded big misunderstanding and sweeping every bad thing under the rug. It was like every character suddenly did a personality 180. Ugh. The ending felt ridiculously rushed.
Poor Bandon. Dusty is such a pos. So is the ex. And the parents. I generally like Max Walker's books, even with the slight plotholes and predictable twists, but the last third of this one made me so mad. What a letdown.
The first 2/3 would've put this book at 3 stars but the last 1/3 destroyed it.
Audio is full 5 stars, Greg Boudreaux is fantastic.
