About this listen
The promise of happiness Hugh is offering seems too good to be true. That’s because it is…
As I stand outside the registry office with my husband-to-be, Hugh, I can tell something isn’t right. He won’t speak to me, he won’t even look at me and it’s almost making me have second thoughts.
Almost.
Despite the feeling in my gut, I’m sure I’m doing the right thing. After all I’ve been through in the last year—the death of my parents, and my partner of ten years walking out, I deserve this chance of a new start. I can’t return to my lonely life—I don’t want to be alone again.
So I go ahead.
It’s only our wedding night and already, I sense even more that I might have made a mistake. Hugh’s disappeared. I mean, what sort of a man leaves his bride alone on their wedding night? I ring the police, I ring around hospitals and when I can take no more, I return home alone. I’ll never forgive him for this.
Except I do.
Professionally, I’m flying. But in my personal life, I’m a hot mess and it doesn’t take much for me to believe Hugh’s explanations and apologies. Again, I push my fears and anxieties to the side and try to enjoy our first days as newlyweds.
But with his ring firmly on my finger, Hugh starts to show his true colours and it often feels as though he’s taking me over. My heart, my home, my finances, my career—my life.
He says he doesn’t know how I ever survived without him, and neither do I. The trouble is, will I survive with him?

I enjoyed the narration of Naomi Madeline
Nicola is getting over the loss of her parents and the ending her marriage to Hugh. It had been a whirlwind romance, Its after they get married, problems begin. Hugh is an emotional and occasional physical abuser of Nicola. This is a amazing thriller.

Extremely Predictable
The narrator was excellent. Other than that, the storyline was bog-standard.
The main character was pathetic and unbelievable. There is no spoiler to this story because it's lacking in content. It drones on and on about GAS LIGHTING. In fact, it should have been the title. It's a great shame because normally, l love Maria Frankland

Superb narration, compelling story
I don’t know if enjoyed the story because I wanted to shout at Nicola for being so naïve and to her friends and family for being so accepting of such out of character behaviour! I think I’m too much of a fan of Silent Witness to buy some of the forensic plot details, but there were some good twists and I binged to the end, which is always a good sign of a cracking psychological thriller. Naomi Madelin’s performance is excellent. She maintained a very convincing Yorkshire accent throughout, acted the story perfectly and her character differentiation was very clear. Recommended.

did he deserve that?
Spoiler alert. This is a difficult book to write a review on without there being spoilers so, if you don’t want to know what happens don’t read on. Did Gary deserve what happened? This is a frustrating book if only because it’s so darned predictable and yet, despite things being glaringly obvious to the reader Nicola, an intelligent woman holding down a responsible job, can’t see it. Gary os obnoxious and there’s some stereotyping in this book. Council house equates to bad person which is utterly wrong as I can testify to myself. Anyway, does anyone deserve to do time for a crime they did not commit just because money talks? Well, you be the judge of that and make no mistake about it, money talked here in the end.
