Summary

There are hangovers, there are bad hangovers, and then there's waking up inside someone else's head. Bartender Charlie Wilkes is faced with this exact dilemma when he wakes to find himself trapped inside The Black Room: a space consisting of impenetrable darkness and a huge, ethereal screen floating in its center. It is through this screen that Charlie sees the world of Minnie - his unwitting and unwilling host - while he undergoes an out-of-body experience like no other.

How did he get there? What has happened to his life? And how can he exist inside the mind of a troubled, fragile, but beautiful woman with secrets of her own? Uncertain whether he's even real or if he is just a figment of Minnie's imagination, Charlie must enlist her help - as well as his newfound psychic abilities - if he is to find a way out of The Black Room, a place where even the light of the screen goes out every time Minnie closes her eyes....

This Book Caught Me By Surprise

Be prepared to be gripped. this book had me from the offset. The Author reads the book and does a darn good job of it. he makes it come to life and he made my day at work fly by. I bought part 2 immediately and am awaiting part 3.

The story is intense and gripping and certainly leaves you wondering. I panicked at the end as I though that was it all over but no there is more! An existential nightmare thus will get you thinking about your place in the world. I loved it.

thrilling start

really good start to the book makes me want to listen more. The narrator has a northern twang to his voice very listenable.

Gripping & Original...loved it!

Where does In the Black Room rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd rank it very high in my collection of audiobooks as it's so original. I wouldn't, as a rule, pay this much for such a short recording, and it's a shame all 4 parts weren't released in one audiobook, but I downloaded parts 1 & 2 together feeling very confident that I would enjoy them as I've not long finished listening to Luke's 'The Stone Man', and that instantly became one of my all-time favourite audiobooks.

What did you like best about this story?

The originality, the mystery...being a jaded old horror/sci-fi fan sometimes I find things seem a bit predicatable or formulaic, but this didn't...it surprised me and constantly had me wondering what was going to happen next. At the start I (rather ambitiously) decided to just allow myself to listen for an hour a day to try and eke it out...well that decision went out the window after the first hour...I just had to keep listening to find out what happened next!.

What about Luke Smitherd’s performance did you like?

Well one big bonus of having the author narrating is that he knows exactly what was in his head when he wrote these lines...he knows exactly what he's trying to convey. Having said that, I've listened to some audiobooks where the author was the narrator and they did their book a disservice as they didn't have the ability to bring the book to life. Luckily Luke Smitherd doesn't fall into that category, and he did a great job!

Any additional comments?

Loved the first part of The Black Room...can't wait for the rest!

The best part

I've red the 4 part separately and this part is the best by far.
I've enjoyed it the most
Although I found the separate Books very expensive in total and wished if I got the full story in one book in stead

One quarter of a book for full price

More fool you if you fall for it. I did and won't be purchasing books 2,3 and 4 "in order to get the full story" to quote the author
