About this listen

From the author of the international best seller The Stone Man, short-listed for Audible UK's Book of the Year Award 2015.

Here are the rules.

Method: you can't use a gun. You can't use explosives. You can't use poison. It has to be up close and personal. You don't have to worry about leaving evidence; that will be taken care of.

Victim: no one suicidal. No one over the age of 65. No one with a terminal illness.

Choose your method. Choose your victim.

Chris Summer was a 21-year-old call centre worker. A dropout. A nobody, still living at home with his parents. Then one day the Man in White came to his family's house, offering a seemingly impossible choice: kill a random stranger - one of Chris' choosing - within 12 days in order to save the lives of five kidnapped siblings. Refuse, and they die slowly and painfully.

The clock is ticking, the Man in White is watching and Chris has some very important choices to make.

This is a tale of fear, indecision, confused masculinity and brutal violence - a story of a coddled young man thrust into a world of sharp metal and bone. Ask yourself if you could do it. Then ask yourself who you would choose.

I know, I know, always praise for this damn Smitherd bloke. Like a lot of people I'm enjoying this weird and wonderful journey that Luke is taking us on with his books. To me he has two great strengths. The first is that he takes the ordinary man in the street and successfully transplants him into extraordinary situations. He's done this with sci-fi, the supernatural and even recently with tragic black comedy. Now he's done it with a straight out thriller. That's the second strength, he manages to take this approach across multiple genres and deliver plots within them that are pretty well unique and surprising.

Actually there is a third strength. I wrote after reading The Stone Man that one of the scenes in that is one of the most powerful I had listened to and again there was one at the conclusion of "the process". Masterfully done.

Bringing back Matt Addis to do the narration does step up the level a notch from Luke's own perfectly good narration. My one complaint is that the last hour and a half of this audiobook is actually a bonus consisting of the first chapter of The Stone Man. I don't mind authors doing this but I do think Audible and the blurb should make it clear how much of what we are buying is original content and how much is such additional material. Especially in this case where I suspect the majority of purchasers will already have listened to it.

That aside, simply put, he's done it again. So which genre will he choose next? Will we be seeing chick-lit from Luke Smitherd some time soon? I wouldn't put it past him!

How have I not discovered Luke Smitherd until now? What's the matter with me?This book is just BRILLIANT! Every person I talk to I ask the same question, "if you had to kill someone, who would it be?" What a concept, fabulously executed with fast moving prose, excellent dialogue and detailed characterisation. If you haven't read or listened to this, do so NOW! This moral dilemma will stay with me for a long, long time to come. Mind-blowing! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. 5 stars doesn't do it justice. It plays with your mind and then some. Kudos Mr Smitherd, and to Matt Addis, (who, by now must have enough ivory back scratchers to use a different one each and every day of the year!). WOW!!!!!!

wow! Wow! WOw! WOW!!!

Found this frustrating. It was so close to slipping over into something really good but never managed to let itself go. And the frustrating ending just added to the annoyance.

Frustrating

My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
The post story did not give us any closure, which i desperately need more than my othet half does.

I will miss Klaus and would love to know what he did next.

I am glad this book is not a glamorised Holywood run of the mill.

It makes you think.

Makes you think before you would act.

Kill Someone

I bought this on sale, but would be just as happy if I had spent my credit for the month on this. The story follows Chris, just an ordinary guy given a horrible task. I don't want to spoil anything as it really is worth a read but either he kills someone or 5 people die. This reminded me so much of the tests you take where you decide if to pull the lever on the train to kill 3 old people or 1 child etc. It's makes you wonder to yourself, who could you kill? Who would you kill? Could you kill?

I thought it was very realistic considering the theories of "red rooms" on the dark web, and how we have been shown recently that the rich can have deranged fetishes and when you have the money to buy anything you want, "normal" things don't satisfy you anymore.

Pick this up, it's quite a quick read if you play on higher than 1x speed like me, and I got through it in 2 listens.

Thought provoking and excellent

I have only read one of Luke's books before and enjoyed it enough to buy this one, but this one was so much better. The characters were rich and realistic and the plot thoroughly thought provoking. I also love the author's message at the end, which persuaded me to leave this review. I would highly recommend

unputdownable!!!

I was originally tempted by the title and the premise of this story but enjoyed it even more than I expected. This was no over the top Hollywood action thriller- it was so much better than that, with its down to earth character and setting. I was gripped from the first page and kept on wondering what I would do in the same situation. It was uncomfortable listening in places and I found myself wincing at times. I would have been hiding behind the sofa peeping through my fingers at certain points of the story, except I was actually driving and listening to it so I couldn't! It was a real roller coaster emotional ride for me and the best part, as I said previously, was the way that it got into my head and kept me thinking about what I would do. I've read several of Luke Smitherd's stories and enjoyed them all but this is my favourite so far.

Shocking, gripping and fantastic!

Great story, unlike anything else. Straight to the action, and a fast pace all the way to the end.

Very very entertaining..
