Summary
The seventh book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.
Murdered people don't kill themselves. A quiet night on a country road. The stillness shattered by a car engulfed in flames, and a burned body discovered in the driver's seat. As the investigation unfolds, DCI Carol Jordan and psychological profiler. Tony Hill quickly realise that this is more than just a tragic accident. And so begins the hunt for a truly terrifying killer, someone who believes he is invisible, untraceable and untouchable. As other victims are found to have met the same terrible fate, and with more women at risk, Tony and Carol are drawn into a dark and twisted web of fear and revenge that will force them to question their own ideas of justice.
Critic reviews
"One of the most surprising twists you'll read this year. Outstanding." (Irish Independent)
"Engrossing...a colossal reminder of just why McDermid has been the queen of crime for three decades." (Heat)

excellent story well constructed.
great as usual. not so many twists in this plot, felt a little rushed. narrator seemed to have a strange idea of accents....asian sounding name almost began to sound like aint half hot mum and Ambrose character sounded as if hed had too much devon custard!! still a typically solid and exciting author and a little shock at the end

Beware of Weddings
The best crime writer at the top of her game. Twists turns and all you expect come into this book.

Disappointing
I have enjoyed every book in this series, except this one.. the ending seemed rushed and it just seemed to be a rehash of other books in the series.

Brilliant
Can't say too much without spoiling things an excellent read but if you've not read any of this series do yourself a favour and don't make this the first one. W

Really brilliant storyline
When I first dtarted listening to this series I didn’t like the readers voice....got used to it now .
Only thing that irritates a bit is the carol Jordan character is so selfish petulant and stroppy I don’t understand why Tony let’s her use him as a doormat ....but the overall story line is great .
Would recommend

Mixed
A well told story but somewhat contrived. The author develops a good plot but Tony figures out the motive simply because “there is no other explanation”. In previous books in the series Tony description he’s a coearcrstiobsoe for his thinking. In this one the author ascribes a motive and the hero has it handed to him on the basis that it’s the only reasonable explanation. Unusually simplistic for Val McDiarmid

Val Mcdermid classic
the story was classic Val McDermid enjoyable and keeps you on the edge of your seat . the narration however left a lot to be desired I found his accents difficult to place and his female voice was very caricature. I would listen again but this narrator hasn't been one of my favorites

Val McDermid -always a winner
Listening to this story was like catching up with lost friends. All the characters were there with the same problems and outlooks just with a more challenging puzzle to unravel.
... I didn't Iike the ending BUT ...
