About this listen

At the age of 50, Eddie Brocklesby decided to run her first half marathon. Until that point, she'd done little running, and her exercise regime consisted of little more than chauffeuring her children to their own sports clubs.

In common with so many people, any interest she'd shown in sport in her childhood had diminished as her adult life progressed, with spare time becoming ever more limited in the face of work and family commitments. But the half marathon was the first of what was to become a hugely impressive trajectory of sporting accolades and successes.

After that event, and following the loss of her husband of 30 years to cancer, she completed a marathon. Now nearly 74, the past 20 years have seen her take part in marathons, triathlons and Ironman races across the globe, and she has accrued many medals and awards.

In Irongran, Eddie looks back on her life and explains just how she's managed to develop the energy to match the enthusiasm she's always had for an active lifestyle. She shares the difficulties she's experienced in her sporting endeavours and explains how she's managed to overcome them.

Eddie is passionate about the health and well-being of our ageing population and provides up-to-date research about why keeping active in later years is so important, along with guidance about how to remain full of life in your later years.

I pretty much never write reviews, but felt compelled to do so by the fact that this book has been significantly spoiled by the dreadful narration. She sounded bored by what she was reading, it was not fluent and the pronunciation was awful. A real shame as read by the right person this should have been excellent.

Ruined by woeful narration

Awesome blueprint for a 1st timer like me and more experienced athletes. I learnt so much and it schooled and talked me through so many lessons learnt

The best book I've read on Triathlon.

It was enjoyable despite the narrator picking up a book for the first time. Come on a book about a triathlete and maybe the narrator or producer would realise there are two sylables not three in the word ATHLETE. Also place names mangled throughout.

BEWARE Awful narration

I had to persevere through the awful narration as I want to hear this great story.
There were sentences where she paused half way and then ran straight into the next sentence or paragraph, leaving me to make sense in my head and then catch up. This was very confusing.
Loved the tale but I would recommend the book over this audiobook any day. I wouldn't wish to impose this on someone else. shame as the story is fantastic

get the book. narrator is awful, but story great

Excellent read and an amazing woman. The narrator had some annoying pronunciation of some basic terms and especially anything scientific which spoilt it at times. Suspect reading this book would be better than listening.

Great inspirational story but annoying narration

Edwina is an amazing woman. Totally inspirational with her charity work and determination. She does nothing by half!

However, listening to Charlotte Emmerson is painful. The mispronounciation of Kona to Conner left me at one point wondering where she was referring, Chassis becomes Chasse and constant untimely inflections plus falling over punctuation gaps is somewhat off putting. I would never class myself as a literary perfectionist but it's enough to put me off listening to any other book read by her.

An unfortunate let down for what is a great trip through someone else's amazing life.

Great inspirational book, shame about the narrator

At the age of 63 I feel as if I’m not as fit as I was. Put it down to getting older. Not accepting that now!

Totally inspiring!

I enjoyed this audiobook as I have also completed Ironman triathlons and could appreciate the fact that we both were late starters in joining the world of exercise. I learnt a lot from the author about ageing and exercise and will follow a lot of her suggestions. However, the narrator was awful....she was very stilted and did not read the narrative with the correct expression and at times it sounded as though she was seeing the sentences for the first time as she read them. To make matters worse her pronunciation of some words, mainly place names, was appalling. Once heard, I could not ‘unhear’ them and it made me cringe every time she said them. It was a shame as this was a good listen otherwise.

what an amazing and inspiring woman Eddie is. I hope I can sustain my own fitness into my old age and be that older competitor that inspires others.

Just amazing.
