Not my favourite

I didn't find this as gripping as most Wexford stories - the interplay of the characters wasn’t as prominent.

A tiny bit dated but very good

very well written by a master storyteller and really well read. Calling it dated is a little unfair its just pre mobile phone and Internet so it seems like from a long time ago. Give it a listen you won't regret it.

I do love a Ruth Rendell but…

“Possible spoiler alert”. I enjoyed this one as much as any of her others, but I find it baffling that there never seems to be a sense of urgency in them. Eg, an emergency call from someone worried they’ll bleed to death if the ambulance doesn’t hurry leads us to a convoy of which the ambulance is third in line trundling up a long drive with detailed description of wooded area, eventually house and courtyard, before a lot of faffing about choosing a means of entry, then dallying in a room with two dead bodies. I can’t imagine how long all this must have taken, but the poor woman must have bled to death long ago by the time this lot got to her.

A brilliant plot, will keep you guessing.

Totally absorbing. A fantastic plot. Expertly read by Robin, whose voice is perfect for the story.

Decent addition to canon.

Was not sure about this one when started. Perseverance took over. As story developed U had thoughts about one of the culptrits but that was about all.

Great story

A great and twisty Rendell, narrator is fine although more monotone than others in the series. There’s a cough halfway through which should have been edited out, otherwise no issues with the audio quality.

Good narrator

Story is a good yarn. Not enough clues to get the ending so a Agatha let’s introduce somebody only mentioned in passing ending
