About this listen
By the author of Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls and a heroine of the body image movement, an intimate, gutsy memoir about being a fat woman.
Jes Baker burst onto the body positivity scene when she created her own ads mocking Abercrombie and Fitch for discriminating against all body types - a move that landed her on the Today show and garnered a loyal following for her raw, honest, and attitude-filled blog missives.
Building on the manifesta power of Things, this memoir goes deeply into Jes' inner life, from growing up a fat girl to dating while fat. With material that will have listeners laughing and crying along with Jes' experience, this new book is a natural fit with her irreverent, open-book style.
A deeply personal take, Landwhale is a glimpse at life as a fat woman today, but it's also a reflection of the unforgiving ways our culture still treats fatness, all with Jes' biting voice as the guide.

"Jes Baker's words are ointment for the soul. I want to give this book to every person who's ever struggled with their body and its place in this world. Read this book. Thank me later." (Julie Murphy, number one New York Times best-selling author of Dumplin ')
"It's tempting to call Jes Baker 'fearless,' but to do so would diminish her profound capacity for vulnerability and, by extension, her strength. The thing that makes Jes such a force is that she is so brave, so funny, so blazing, so herself, even in the face of fear. I do not know what we would do without her." (Lindy West, New York Times best-selling author of Shrill)
"With the perfect tidal wave of humor and candid emotion, Jes once again shows me how to not only love my own body, but every body around me, as well. It's as if she's written Landwhale about the daily complicated love affair I have in my skin, and I'll never stop reading it. All women, at all stages of their journey, must read this book!" (Brittany Gibbons, New York Times best-selling author of Fat Girl Walking and The Clothes Make the Girl (Look Fat)?)

Liberating game changer
This vital book joins the dots between fatphobia, body liberation, mental health, diet culture and self care, and it does so with humour and generosity. Nothing else I have read brings as much vulnerability, nuance and complexity to these topics. Jes's humanity shines through and it is an honour to hear her reading her own words exactly as she meant them when she wrote them. Fierce wit and a beautifully fresh and honest style make difficult topics accessible, and I love how the book places all the issues in the wider political frameworks of sexism, racism, ageism and ableism that are also harmful and detrimental to our fundamental humanity. This book is wise and kind, like its author, and reading it was full of laughter, tears and moments of recognition and recovery. Amazing.

A must read if you’re trying to heal your relationship with your body
I’ve always been a fan of Jes Baker, but her memoir is truly spectacular. It had me laughing out loud, and crying, as she described in detail her experiences of living in a fat body, learning to embrace body liberation, her experience of body shaming and weight stigma, the internet trolls that have tried (unsuccessfully) to tear her down, love, PCOS, and life. And despite all of the abuse and hardships she’s experienced throughout her life, and living in her body, she seems to have processed any bitterness and rage and chooses instead to embody kindness for herself and others- and for that I’ve got mad respect. She shows how the most important thing we’ve got in this life is the relationship we have with ourselves - something that I strive to help my psychotherapy clients with every single day. Landwhale is a beautifully written example of the perils of weight stigma and fat phobia, how it permeates everything from public transportation to Harry Potter World, and what can be done to heal if you’re at the receiving end <3 So much love for this book, and for Jes. Girl, hit me up if you’re ever in London and I’d love to buy you a vodka tonic xx - Jenna

Jes should run the world
I am a huge fan of Jes' work so I felt fairly sure I was going to love the book. I also read her last book - which is a little more self help than this.
I loved this book because it's so painfully honest, it connected so deeply with so much of my life experiences and because she always shares so authentically. This book served as a perfect reminder that we're not alone, that as humans we are worthy of better (from society and ourselves) and that as a community, we really can action change.
