About this listen

Commodore Gage leads a desperate final attempt to save Albion.

A fragile alliance stands against the Daegon. Star nations with decades of war and hatred between them must unite against the invaders who will conquer them all without mercy. When Gage must destroy a key enemy installation, his coalition could crumble before the first shot is fired.

As that battle rages, Albion is dying. Her people crushed beneath the occupier’s heel, losing all they are as they're turned into little more than slaves and cannon fodder for their oppressors.

Albion needs heroes, and Gage must find a way to free his home world before all is lost. There will be liberty or there will be death.

Liberty or Death is the final action and adventure packed novel in The Exiled Fleet series.

Excellent story

Just one little thing. Mark Boyett is an amazing narrator but Tolan and McGowens voices changed in this last book.

Still didn’t detract from the whole story. Great listen.
Can’t wait for more Richard Fox books to come out!

Short and dialogue heavy

Fortunately the the narrator is brilliant, so the myriad of characters are narrated well. Unfortunately the book was short, and uninspired. there didn't appear to be any threat or challenge. Even when the Bismarck went down, there was absolutely no emotion to the loss.

In previous books the author put more feeling into situations, like a mother becoming an alcoholic because her sons transformation. Or a coup because others think they are better suited to rule.

Whereas there is nothing in this book. Sad but I'll park the series because of this book

Anti-climactic let down.

This is gonna be a spoiler filled review so be warned.

I will say that despite everything I say here, the performance was great, 5/5, it is the story that is the issue, not the narrator.

This book, compared to the 5 previous, was a massive let down.
The first and biggest part for me personally was that there was no real "down time" in the book where more intrigue could happen and characterization could occur. It was streamlined so tight and to the point of doing the battles and all needed to "finish" the Daegon threat. But it felt hollow in it.

Secondly, there was no real new world building done either. Nothing interesting happened, nothing was added or given greater light on. Except a minor thing at the end which was an obvious sequel bait but even that felt forced and rushed in this book. Sure it had been foreshadowed in earlier books but it should have had better build up in this book.

Thirdly, the book opens up with them destroying the Oculus and thus the majority of the Daegon threat has instantly been subdued and stopped. This instantly made it all feel much less important. Sure they still had to free Albion but that was essentially a foregone conclusion with the supply lines of the Daegon cut and the sad part is, he could have made this a failure to increase stakes for another book which would have been better! But no, they succeed and all so it felt like it was just checking boxes to get the desired happyish ending.

Fourthly, the main antagonist, Tiberius, who has been chasing Gage and all for ages is killed off by his lover instead of one of the main characters! It felt so narratively cheap. Did it make sense? Yes, but it was narratively disappointing and I felt very hollow about it.

Fifthly: most of the battles had, for all the reasons previous, lost almost all of their punch. Only the loss of Bismarck felt like it mattered and was interesting. The rest after the Oculus defeat was just "meh".

I cannot in good concience recommend this book to anyone. I will recommend the series but this one book is the bottom of all the books. Too short, too predictable, does not give the right pay offs. It felt like the author just wanted to be over and done with the series. Great universe, great characters, they stayed true but it was all just so shallow here.

TLDR: Way too short, quick to the story beats, no real pay offs, do not recommend.
