About this listen
Eldritch Swan is a dead man. Or at least that is what his nephew Stephen has always been told. Until one day Eldritch walks back into his life after 36 years in an Irish prison. He won't reveal any of the details of his incarceration, insisting only that he is innocent of any crime.
His return should be of interest to no-one. But the visit of a solicitor with a mysterious request will take Eldritch and his sceptical nephew from sleepy seaside Paignton to London, where an exhibition of Picasso paintings from the prestigious Brownlow collection proves to be the starting point on a journey that will transport them back to the Second World War and the mystery behind Eldritch's imprisonment.
In 1940, he was personal assistant to a wealthy diamond dealer in Antwerp, whose collection of modern art was the envy of many. The subsequent disappearance of those paintings began a trail of murder and intrigue which was to have a catastrophic effect on Eldritch's life. But untangling the web of murky secrets, family ties and old betrayals that conceals the truth will prove to be a dangerous pursuit for Eldritch and Stephen. Before long, a mysterious enemy is doing everything possible to stop the truth emerging - at whatever cost....

Good, entertaining listening
To be perfectly honest, I bought this audiobook only because it was on sale, and I was almost giving up half-way through the story. I’m glad I didn’t, as the turn of events unfolding in the second half of the story is surprising and very well crafted. I recommend it. I only give the story 4 stars because the relatively low-speed start really tested me.

Excellent book, astonishing narration.
Joe Jameson is a freak. Every character, from an elderly Irishman to a sharp Belgian lawyer has a pitch-perfect, impeccably accented voice that never wavers.
Honestly the only tiny thing I could dislike is the slight mispronunciation of the odd French word and the fact that Jameson doesn’t know that the English pronounce the name Beauchamp as ‘Beecham’. It’s that good.
As for the plot, this is one of Goddard’s best. One twist and turn after another. Unputdownable.

A fantastic story with the usual Goddard brilliance
A great story, written with usual Goddard patience that just draws you in. Brilliantly narrated - the Dublin accents were spot on.
If you’re looking for something and your fearful of wasting a credit, this one’s definitely no waste

Great book, great story
It's always interesting to learn something new. The 'troubles,' in Ireland were something I knew almost nothing about. The intricacies of this book, on this subject, educated me on so many things, and the storyline brought it to life for me. Believable characters, and a very good plot. Brilliantly narrated.

Interesting read
Different from my usual genre , but nonetheless enjoyable . Quite an unusual story line . Nonetheless interesting , whilst the narrators. Voice came over quite monotone in the actual narrations. His character voices and accents were believable and accurate . So I forgive him his narrative in parts . All in all a good listen .

Enthralling!
I “discovered” Robert Goddard through Audible and now I am a fan. This book is enthralling. I really cared about the characters and the story had my heart racing more than once. I personally love time shift novels and this one is now among my favourites. Great narration by Joe Jameson.

A ripping good yarn
This is the first time I have heard of Robert Goddard, and I have to say, that apart from a slightly slow start, this book is extremely well crafted and really pulled me in. All in all, well worth listening to, also helped by a pleasantly voiced narration. I'm now off to find his other titles...

Great story!
Some have said that this has a slow start but I was intrigued right away - some people must be very impatient! Great plot, (Although 36yrs seemed rather a long time) well crafted and paced. All characters were well drasn, and I loved the Belgian lawyer, Bart. Also loved the time shift element and the cliffhangers!
One thing grated, though, and that was the romance between the protagonists - it was like earnest Endeavour meets avaricious and vengeful Lady Gaga and seemed particularly unlikely and unbelievable. Overall, this got on my nerves, since one was utterly likeable but put himself repeatedly on the line for the completely undeserving and ungrateful other!
Fantastic narration - even the female characters, and some great accents.
If you can get past brash and greedy Gaga well worth a listen.
