Summary

Book 2 in the Eisenhorn series.

Inquisitor Eisenhorn must track down and defeat the forces who would destroy him or face the wrath of the Ordo Malleus....

Listen to It Because:

Eisenhorn's back in a classic thriller. What could be cooler than an inquisitor on the run for a crime he didn't commit? Not much. How much is Eisenhorn willing to compromise himself – and his closest friends – and risk his soul for a chance to clear his name?

The Story:

A century after his recovery of the alien Necroteuch, Gregor Eisenhorn is one of the Imperial Inquisition's most celebrated agents. But when a face from his past returns to haunt him, and he is implicated in a great tragedy that devastates the world of Thracian Primaris, Eisenhorn's universe crumbles around him. The daemon Cherubael is back, and seeks to bring the inquisitor to ruin - either by his death, or by turning him to the service of the Dark Gods.

Abnett and Longworth at their best

Once again the fantastic pairing of Abnett and Longworth strike again. A very well written book and a thoroughly engaging narration make this one of the best listens I’ve had recently. Would most definitely recommend.

Broken the "sequel sucks" stigma

Enthralling read, an unexpected plot twist in the first third propels the story to a new level.

Given this is a first person trilogy, some of the "pursuit" sections of this book seem to fall a bit flat, never really feels like eisenhorn is in danger of being found/ambushed due to the machinations of the imperium.

Some cruel twists right at the end, as is Abnett's way.
A big laugh or two, overall an engaging read as always!

Props to Toby again, he really is Dan Abnett's voice!

A good sequel to Xenos

Another very well written and engaging Eisenhorne story. The narration is excellent as usual. It is a bit raunchier a story in places. It remains a good story with a good different perspective of the Imperium. Generally it is well paced but the feeling of threat of being chased is lost towards the end. The story wobbles a bit as it comes to the climax without details really of how all the clues and information were found. Towards the end it feels a bit lazy writing. However it is still an excellent book and audiobook and highly recommend it.

Loved it

Narration great but cringed slightly at the mutant "twist" dialogue. Listening to the evil characters with some noise cancelling headphones is truly harrowing.

Story also good but ending felt very rushed - you spend 9 hours going through the story and then it is all wrapped up in the space of a few minutes with a comment along the lines of "everything was sorted". It felt like a cop-out given the amount of time given to fairly trivial parts of the story. I suspect the author was struggling to cut the story down to an acceptable length.

Entertaining continuation

I enjoyed this book but not as much as the first. This one took me through a great mystery but then never really adequately explained the thinking behind the actions.

The travels around the different planets was an interesting break from the story and made it seem more real.

There are two missing sections/paragraphs at the end of two different chapters.

Great listen. One of the best in the 40k setting.

A great read. Abnett catches the mood of the 40 setting really well. Griped me from start to finish.
