In the old world there were many rules.

I really wanted to like this book, after loving the first I bought it with such high hopes! Honestly, I can't decide what I think of it, I'm really on the fence. While I did like the characters and the story did keep me guessing it didn't give me the punch in the gut of the first book. At times I found I was getting bored and felt like skipping chapters. Without posting spoilers the ending was very neat and I did find myself asking "what the?" I think the author is in some kind of competition to see how many repeat words he can fit into the book, I felt like if I heard 'Sam and Mary Walsh' one more time I would scream. And the man's name beginning with 'G' stalking her for so long was bizarre.
Overall giving it 3 stars, like the theme and the author I just felt it was a huge letdown compared to Bird Box

This was a bit of a slog to get through and the story is a bit weak. It was nice to follow Malorie a bit longer in her story but it’s not something I would recommend

A bit lacklustre

Whereas Bird Box was an apocalyptic story with two narratives culminating in two "finales" that you know are coming, Malorie is more of a standard apocalyptic story where things happen along an adventure. If you liked Bird Box because of the format you might be disappointed in this sequel (see other reviews), if you liked it because of the world, characters and scary moments, you'll like this one too. There are good twist/s, good character development and further insight into human survival.

I noticed the author has a tendency to be quite repetitive in the first book, but this time around it got intense. How about dedicating a bit more time to making the ending plausible, instead of repeating 'Tom the man, Tom the boy,' over and over again?

Alright, but disappointing

The concept is great, and there are a few exciting moments in the book, but they're drowned out by the rambling on and on. They're on their way to a blind train for what it feels like 2+ hours in real time, and there is only 1 intriguing moments on that journey.

2 Hours worth of story, 6 hours worth of Malorie questioning herself, reminiscing the old days, and being anxious in a blindfold.

ignored other poor reviews about it dragging as I wanted to know what happened in the end. Dragged as there were pages and pages of inner thoughts that were repetitive and draining with nothing of any substance and in the end I gave in and like others had to keep hitting the skip button. progress was made bur very and painfully slowly. persistence paid off and the action picked up at the end leaving the reader on a high and so satisfied at the end that I nearly forgot about the slow slow slow start. The end felt rushed and like the author couldn't be bothered where loose ends were left untied and disappointment lay bare especially with what happened to Gary but also about the other neighbours ours sister and so on. This book had great potential but didn't make it. Still worth a read to find out what happened in the end.

This was a real mixed bag from a story point of view - their are times it has the same intensity & energy of the first book, times it feels overly repetitive and an ending that feels more like fan fiction than a plausible, well thought through piece of fiction. There are loose threads galore, last minute coincidental resolutions and overall it ends up undermining the journey to get there.

It wasn’t a bad book, and the narration was excellent again, but it definitely struggled to live up to the expectations of the first. A solid 3.5 for the story, lifted to a 4 if you enjoy the narrator.
