Summary

London, 1936.

Lena Aldridge is wondering if life has passed her by. The dazzling theatre career she hoped for hasn’t worked out. Instead, she’s stuck singing in a sticky-floored basement club in Soho, and her married lover has just left her. She has nothing to look forward to until a stranger offers her the chance of a lifetime: a starring role on Broadway and a first-class ticket on the Queen Mary bound for New York.

After a murder at the club, the timing couldn’t be better and Lena jumps at the chance to escape England. Until death follows her onto the ship and she realises that her greatest performance has already begun.

Because someone is making manoeuvres behind the scenes, and there’s only one thing on their mind….

Murder.

Miss Aldridge Regrets is the exquisite new novel from Louise Hare. A brilliant murder mystery, it also explores class, race and pre-WWII politics, and will leave listeners reeling from the beauty and power of it.

Critic reviews

"Glamour and grit combine in this smartly plotted, wonderfully atmospheric historical murder mystery, with a heroine I won't forget. I loved it." (Frances Quinn, The Smallest Man)

"Giving off the best Agatha Christie vibes but also compelling issues of race and identity.... Keeps you guessing until the end." (Julie Owen Moylan, The Green Eyed Girl)

"Perfectly evokes the glamour of the Queen Mary as well as the gritty underbelly of 1930s Soho. Beautiful writing, striking characters and a twisting plot make this a compelling read." (Anita Frank, The Return)

Okay story, bit too descriptive to begin with

I enjoyed the story, the first half just seemed to use 1000 words to describe something where 10 would have done. The story itself was good but getting through it felt like a lot of effort for the first 50% of the book.

Slow Moving.

Originally I was tempted to listen to this as the Queen Mary is such an iconic vessel with so much history. But I struggled to actually finish the audible. The story just failed to capture my attention fully, although the narrator was good.So overall, a disappointing listen for me this time.

Good story that kept me listening

I liked the story and it kept me interested until the end. The narrator was good on accents, but I found it a bit one paced at times. There were many occasions on which there were pauses that were slightly too long between or within phrases/sentences and although it was jarring at the start, I largely got used to it. Overall, a really enjoyable listen.

interesting

This was a unique story, even if I found the ending unbelievable on multiple levels. The narrator did a good job with voices, but paused oddly. It was better when I ran it on 1.05 speed.

Good performance

The only reason I listened to its end was the performance which was very good.

Slow and disappointing ending

Soooo slow, and the narration doesn’t help, I only persisted because I read a good review of the second book in the series, and figured I’d have to read the first to be able to keep up. But it’s really not a good book, the storyline is dragging and not catching, the characters are not interesting and though it has potential to be great, it just isn’t… By the end I didn’t even care who had killed who, I just wanted it to end…

I kept waiting for it to improve

I struggled to listen to the end. I found it boring. the only good thing about it was the narrators performance.
