About this listen
Special Detective Constable Adamat may be the most capable young investigator in all of Adopest. He's sharp, thoughtful, and his particular sorcery gives him a flawless memory. A transfer to the First Precinct seems like the perfect opportunity to showcase his abilities and advance his career.
But things work differently in the First Precinct. The murder of a businessman's mistress quickly pulls Adamat into an unexpected world of conspiracy and politics where he's forced to use all his wits to stay one step ahead of unseen enemies and keep his friends - and himself - from the guillotine.
Occurs 22 years before the events in Promise of Blood.

Loved it!
Story - 5/5
This is a fantastic little novella to add to the powder mage collection. There isn't much action, as it is from the point of view of a young Adamat, but you do get a great detective story where he disrupts protocol, and disobeys his superiors (as usual) - all for the sake of justice. Brian McClellan has created a great character here, and if you love him in the main trilogy, this story is a must.
For the price, you do get a good length story compared to other novella's on Audible, and it is made even more worth it if you wait for a 40% off sale. This one and "The Servant of the Crown" are probably the better novellas/short stories for the money if you don't want to commit to buying all of them.
Performance - 4.5/5
Julie Hoverson did another great job; her voice acting is distinct and her story telling is easy to listen to; conveying the mood and atmosphere superbly. I'm not usually a huge fan of female narrators doing male characters, but Hoverson's approach didn't bother me at all. Don't be put off by the change of narrator from the main trilogy.
Overall - 5/5

Further political intrigue in Adopest
Another brilliant short story fleshing out the history of the Powder Mage world. It's interesting to get some of Adamat's history working for the police. Not as action packed as other stories so if you need thrilling action to be interested in a story then this may not be for you. Narration is good, just not as great as the narrator from the main series of books.
Overall this is a great novella giving you a more political look at how things work in Adopest.
